On this week’s episode of the Smart Home Insider podcast, Daniel Moneta joins to talk about the latest updates to Samsung SmartThings and Matter. A man of many hats, Daniel Moneta serves dual roles as chair of the Matter Marketing and Product subgroup of the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), but also represents Samsung on product and marketing matters for SmartThings. This gives him a unique perspective on SmartThings, Matter and how ecosystems adopt and develop the unifying standard that works between manufacturers. We spend time discussing and delving into all of these topics. The week’s news was brief, but there were a few topics worth discussing. At first, a new vulnerability was discovered on low-cost baby cameras. Manufacturer Meari Technology, which makes white-label cameras for several companies, was found to have a significant security issue that allowed a researcher to access numerous cameras around the world. This has since been corrected, but the cameras in question would need to be replaced. Researcher Azdoufal is the same one who discovered the vulnerability of DJI robot vacuum cleaners. Homey is now available on new platforms. If you use Homey Cloud, Homey Pro, Homey Pro Mini or a self-hosted Homey server, you can now access it from Android TV or webOS, including in a Tesla in-car browser. Details are light, but it appears Netflix is working on its own voice assistant. The new AI voice assistant would live within the Netflix app and help users find new content to watch. Finally, a late leak reveals that Google will soon launch a new smart display. This appears to potentially run counter to Apple’s highly anticipated smart home display, which is scheduled to launch in fall 2026.
