While to many it seems like a relic from a forgotten era, with Gen Z returning to physical media and offline music, the iPod Nano is suddenly coming back into fashion. In fact, for a generation increasingly disillusioned with devices offering a constant stream of endless distractions, iPods writ large are experiencing something of a renaissance.
If you don’t remember, the iPod Nano was an instant icon when it was released in September 2005. In an era before smartphones, when our portable devices were valued for their small size (instead of the size of their screens), the Nano defined the way millions of people enjoyed music on the go. But for new Gen Z fans, or retro collectors and enthusiasts of all stripes, the question remains: How much of your music library can you actually put on one of these adorable little guys?
The answer depends on storage, and the Nano came in several versions, from 1GB all the way up to (a huge for the time) 16GB. In practical terms, this means you can fit between 240 songs on the smallest model and 4,000 on the 16GB model.
Songs by capacity for iPod Nano
Figuring out how many songs you can listen to on an iPod Nano comes down to simple math, although the numbers vary to some extent depending on factors like audio quality and song length. To determine a good ballpark figure, we’ll use Apple standards. Apple used 128 kbps AAC encoding as the standard for iTunes music when it launched in 2003, two years before the Nano was introduced. At this quality level, a song lasting three to four minutes takes up approximately 3.5 MB to 4 MB of storage space. So, with this basis in mind, an iPod Nano can hold roughly the following number of songs at each capacity:
1 GB: 240
2 GB: 500
4 GB: 1000
8 GB: 2000
16 GB: 4000
If you’re craving an even more comprehensive list of bangers, consider upgrading to the iPod Classic. Although slightly larger than the Nano, the last generation had an impressive 160GB of storage, meaning you could store something like 40,000 songs.
