If you grew up between the 1960s and 1980s, audio cassettes were definitely a big part of your life. Any cassette collections you might have owned probably included pre-recorded music from your favorite bands, as well as blank cassettes filled with songs you recorded from the radio to create your own mixtapes. You may have even used a tape recorder’s microphone to create recordings of yourself, family, and friends. Although many of these tapes may have been thrown away a long time ago, you may have kept some of them. But will they still work? And what if you bought a cassette today: how long can you expect it to remain playable? Various estimates exist, but the general consensus seems to be that the tapes can last 30 to 60 years, or even longer if kept in ideal conditions.
A cassette – essentially a small plastic case containing a delicate strip of magnetic tape wound between two reels – stores audio content in magnetic patterns. A cassette player reads the magnetic tape and transforms the patterns into sounds which it broadcasts through a speaker. Each cassette has two sides (A and B), both of which can contain a recording. Previous ideas generally suggested a lifespan for cassettes of between 10 and 30 years, but more recent research suggests that cassettes can remain playable for much longer, typically between 30 and 60 years. This research indicates that longevity is also influenced by both manufacturing quality and the conditions in which the tape is stored.
Ideal conditions for storing cassettes
Estimates of the lifespan of cassette tapes vary widely, as it all depends on how the tape is handled and stored over the years. If you’ve had a box of cassette tapes in the attic for decades – lost among other memorable gadgets – those cassettes might still work, but if they’ve experienced extreme temperatures year after year, the contents may already be lost. However, if you have purchased cassettes more recently (such as during their current renaissance) or are considering purchasing some, careful storage should keep them playable for years.
Library archivists recommend an ideal long-term storage temperature for cassettes between 40 and 54 degrees Fahrenheit, because cooler conditions slow chemical deterioration. Additionally, ideal humidity conditions for tape storage are between 30 and 50 percent relative humidity (RH), as high humidity accelerates deterioration and can promote mold. It is also important to keep the tapes away from direct sunlight and extreme heat sources such as radiators and other types of heaters. It is also recommended that you store cassettes as most people do books, that is, vertically rather than horizontally, as stacking could put pressure on the cassettes at the bottom of the stack.
Additionally, it is important to keep cassettes away from magnets and electrical equipment like speakers, as their electromagnetic fields could affect the recordings. Also keep cassettes in their box when you are not using them, rather than leaving them lying around, unprotected from dust and shock. Another tip is to keep cassette players clean and well maintained, as dirty tape heads and pinch rollers can accelerate tape wear and even physically damage it. Finally, be sure to rewind the cassettes completely after use to reduce the risk of loosening and damage during playback.
How to digitize an audio cassette
If you have old cassettes that still work (yes, you’ll need a cassette player to find out), you may want to keep the recording. If so, you may want to scan them before it’s too late. It might be a nostalgic mixtape or a recording of you and your family when you were little, so it would be a shame if it stopped working and you could never listen to it again.
An easy way to digitize cassettes is to play them through a cassette player and record the audio to a computer. You’ll need a cassette player, a suitable audio cable (probably a 3.5 millimeter to 3.5 millimeter stereo cable), a computer, and recording software (like Audacity). If your computer does not have a suitable audio input, you will need a USB audio capture device or an audio interface that accepts audio output from the cassette player. Then simply connect the player to the computer, click Record on the audio software and play the tape from start to finish. Repeat for the other side of the tape and save the finished recording (WAV and FLAC formats are best for high-quality archival copies). If you don’t want to do it yourself, there are services that will do the work for you. You simply send in your tapes and choose the format you want the content transferred to (e.g. USB stick, DVD or digital download), and the job should be completed around six weeks later. Of course, sending your tapes out into the wild always carries the risk of them being lost or damaged.
