How long will your LG Smart TV receive software updates?
Who can deny the rich colors and inky black levels of an LG OLED TV? Now that the manufacturer has switched to Tandem panels, even LED-LCD fans will have a hard time arguing that OLEDs aren’t bright enough. Beyond the visuals and under the hood, LG TVs are powered by the webOS smart TV platform. This is the software that lets you stream Netflix, stream content from your phone, control smart home devices, and much more. Using webOS seems intuitive and customizable, but you may be wondering how long your LG TV will receive software updates.
Fortunately, the answer is correct: five years. If you bought an LG TV in 2022 or later, the manufacturer promises up to four major webOS updates. This is actually part of an initiative called LG Re:New, which started in early 2024. Whether you bought an LG OLED or a Mini LED doesn’t matter; As long as the TV has webOS, it gets five years of operating system improvements. And we’re not just talking about ordinary security patches: a major operating system update often means entirely new features, applications, and user interface elements.
On r/LGOLED, users have reported that LG TVs older than the 2022 deadline for the LG Re:New program are still receiving at least one major webOS overhaul in addition to regular security patches and individual app updates.
LG promises five-year commitment to webOS and four major updates
LG is one of four TV brands with the longest software support and was only beaten by Samsung’s Tizen operating system (seven years) and Hisense’s VIDAA platform (eight years). Regarding the latter, however, Hisense has traditionally licensed Google TV, Roku OS, and Fire OS on its North American TVs; VIDAA is mainly used on Hisense TVs sold in Europe.
As of this writing, the most recent version of webOS available on LG TV screens is webOS 26. The newest operating system has completely revamped LG’s Home Hub platform; it also added a kids mode and several AI improvements. Unfortunately, webOS 26 also removed support for ColourSpace, bscpylgtv and LG White Balance GUI. If none of these words mean anything to you, proceed as normal; If you used any of these tools to calibrate the picture on your LG TV, we also mourn this loss.
Interestingly, LG has opted for a “one-year delay” for rolling out all major webOS upgrades. According to the manufacturer, this is to ensure that these new features and interfaces will work well with older LG hardware. For those who purchased an LG TV in 2026, webOS 27 – the first of your four operating system updates – likely won’t be available until 2028.
