Data centers have been associated with harmful pollutants and emissions, as well as excessive electricity and water consumption, and many of these problems are why so many U.S. states are trying to ban their local development. But there is another problem that most don’t think about, because only those who know what it’s like to live near a data center can attest to it.
All those electronic devices, servers, cooling solutions, and on-site generators contribute to a lot of noise pollution. According to LSRS, noise from cooling fans and transformers alone can reach up to 80 decibels at the property line. Meanwhile, generator load testing, or electrical generators under heavy load, can be heard up to a mile away. But here’s the problem. It’s not the maximum sound level that’s the problem. The most serious problem, and harmful in the long term, is that the noise is almost incessant for people living nearby. Loud noise can be heard up to a mile away, but low-frequency noise extends even further.
Many systems in a data facility generate constant noise. Cooling towers, dry coolers, rooftop air handlers and HVAC ventilation, all for climate control, transformers, generators and switchgear for medium to high power operations, service vehicle traffic and construction equipment, are all common contributors to noise pollution. Worse yet, during an outage, exactly when you would think things would calm down, the generators kick in to provide backup power to the facility. The sound dissipates as you move away, but can still produce a low-frequency hum that can be heard miles and miles away. This constant buzzing is the cause of several health concerns for the neighbors of a data center.
Why is constant low frequency noise a problem?
People who live near or near data centers have reported experiencing headaches, nausea, dizziness, lack of and trouble sleeping, ear pain, high blood pressure, and ringing in the ears. It’s also not hard to imagine any of these issues exacerbating other health issues, such as high anxiety or worsening mental status.
It should be noted, however, that while there are a few studies on the subject, such as one from 2016 published in the journal “Science of the Total Environment” and another from 2026 at MDPI, there is not enough scientific evidence to establish a definitive link between low-frequency noise and harmful health effects. This doesn’t mean there isn’t a correlation, it just means we don’t have enough empirical evidence to support either side of the argument. You may or may not be inclined to listen and believe the residents living near the data centers, those who are most affected in their daily lives.
The most recent 2026 study concludes that evidence “suggests” that infrasound – the type of low-frequency sound produced by data centers – “may modulate mechanical and biological pathways,” which could alter or disrupt the body’s homeostatic balance; the normal way your body regulates and maintains itself. Keeping your body in balance can help you better cope with problems that arise such as illnesses, injuries or other conditions. When it comes to data centers, lag can cause problems like those described: headaches, ringing in the ears, nausea, or dizziness.
Noise isn’t the only concern, and it’s the real problem
It’s not about relentlessly harassing everyone with the same ideas, but data centers have been shown to contribute to many other unwanted side effects on local communities beyond noise. If noise alone were the only major concern, we probably wouldn’t see as much resistance to developing these facilities. But it is not the only problem. Cloud computing and AI data centers are doing far more harm than just rising utility prices, and frankly, in this economy, that’s already pretty egregious.
Data centers increase air pollution, contribute to negative climate change, consume a lot of water and electricity, take up huge amounts of land, cause noise pollution as noted here, and put additional pressure on already marginalized communities. Some of these impacts extend miles beyond the facilities themselves, as does low-frequency noise.
Even more alarming, despite these ongoing problems, a large number of data centers are about to be built and brought online in the United States. The number of local communities that will soon be affected by these problems is increasing day by day, even exponentially. Even if you don’t live near such a building, you may still have to pay for the skyrocketing costs they entail.
