Google Maps users in the United States will now see the name “Lake America” instead of “Lake Ontario” for the Great Lake that straddles the border between New York and Ontario.
Google said it made the change in response to the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) updating the name of “Lake Ontario” to “Lake America”, following an executive order issued by US President Donald Trump last week.
Canadian Google Maps users will still only see the name “Lake Ontario”, while users outside the United States and Canada will see both names.
- In the United States: Lake America
- In Canada: Lake Ontario
- Outside the United States and Canada: Lake Ontario (Lake America)
Apple Maps hasn’t been updated yet, so the name “Lake Ontario” still appears worldwide. When GNIS updated the name from “Gulf of Mexico” to “Gulf of America” last year, Apple Maps began rolling out the change a day after Google Maps, so it may not be long before Apple follows suit with this “Lake America” change.
