Premium Advanced users will receive early access “in the coming weeks.”
Google Home supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP) standard. This means that users will be able to use a variety of AI agents to perform smart home tasks, as MCP is a software platform that allows agent chatbots to connect to external APIs.
Supported agents include Google Antigravity, Claude, Hermes, and Open Claw, among others. Google says the integration will allow these agents to “work securely with all devices and event history in your Google Home ecosystem.”
What are the use cases here? The company suggests using “natural language to monitor activity, view in-room camera summaries, control connected devices, and create custom smart home dashboards.” This could be useful for people who have invested heavily in connected home appliances and gadgets.
Google says an early access version will arrive in the “coming weeks.” However, it will only be available to Google Home Premium Advanced users for now. This subscription costs $20 per month or $200 per year.
Anthropic introduced MCP in 2024 and it has become somewhat popular over the past year. Google, OpenAI, Microsoft and SpaceXAI all support it in one form or another and many apps connect to it perfectly.
This is generative AI, so of course there are potential problems. Many experts have warned that MCP has serious security flaws, such as the lack of forced authentication. This has happened in real life via a number of data breaches since people started adopting the standard. Be careful out there.
