If your Windows laptop is draining like crazy when away from a charger, adjusting some settings will help you get the most out of each charge.
It’s a terrible feeling to see your laptop’s battery life quickly diminish when you realize you forgot your charger at home. While some Windows laptops have improved battery performance thanks to Microsoft’s renewed focus on ARM systems, the average laptop still relies on the more powerful and power-hungry x86 architecture.
With settings optimized for performance, you’ll be lucky if even the best Windows laptop lasts until lunchtime. Windows 11 has been plagued by performance issues, and despite some recent efforts from Microsoft, it hasn’t overcome its own overhead. All of this means that the best battery life advice for a Windows laptop is to switch to Linux.
However, you can still take steps to preserve your battery in Windows 11. The most important one is to reduce the brightness of your screen; press Win + A then drag the slider down. Beyond that, by selecting the right settings, you can save valuable extra hours before your computer dies. Of course, power management is a matter of trade-offs: the more your laptop does, the faster it drains, so you’ll sacrifice some performance in exchange for longevity. Not everyone needs to implement all of these changes, so mix and match until you achieve a good balance.
Set an energy-efficient power plan
Windows laptops use a few distinct power plans, one of which activates when your laptop is connected to power and another that takes effect when you unplug it. These are often tailored to the computer’s intended use, such as the more aggressive fan curves of a gaming laptop versus a productivity-focused machine. If the default power plan is too battery intensive for you, adjusting it is simple.
Open the Windows 11 Settings app using Win + I and select System > Power & Battery. Here you can adjust the basic power settings under Power modedetermining how long the screen and system will stay awake when plugged in or on battery. Below you will find Screen, sleep, and hibernation timeouts (important to lower if you often leave your machine unused) then Energy saverwhich is similar to your phone’s low power mode. When enabled, it limits background activities, reduces screen brightness, and disables some sophisticated Windows effects. This helps reduce battery usage when you need maximum time, and you can set it to turn on automatically at a chosen threshold.
If you’re a little more adventurous, head to the oldest Control panel by searching for it in the Start menu. Inside her Power Options menu, select Energy saver if it is not already active, click Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings. Close unnecessary apps and background processes
If you’ve already changed your settings to preserve battery life and you still can’t get your laptop to work without a charger, it may be running too many programs at once. Even if you don’t see a stack of open programs on your screen, they may be hiding in the background.
The first place to check is your taskbar. Once you have closed all open apps represented by larger icons, check the smaller icons at the bottom right. Right-click and close the ones you don’t need. Be sure to click the small upward-facing arrow to the left of the icons, which opens an overflow panel.
Don’t overlook the strain that browser tabs can put on your battery. If you have multiple pages open in Chrome or Edge, closing the ones you’re not using helps reduce power consumption.
