It’s finally happening. Final Fantasy VII Reveal is heading to consoles and PC on April 8, 2027, according to the latest Sony State of Play live stream event. For the uninitiated, Revelation is the third installment in a trilogy of remakes that cover the events of the PS1 classic Final Fantasy VII.
The first part was released in 2020 and the second in 2024. Back when people were constantly asking for a remake of Final Fantasy VIII’m not sure they meant “divided into three parts and released over seven years and two console generations”, but here we are.
These aren’t simple pixel-based remakes of a PS1 game. The graphics have been updated, of course, but so has the gameplay. They use a real-time action system that is more akin to modern titles than turn-based RPGs.
These are also extremely time-consuming affairs. Final Fantasy VII Remakethe first in the trilogy, covers the opening Midgar section of the PS1 original. This is more or less a sort of preamble to the 1990s RPG, but Remake extends it to around 50 hours (give or take.)
Somehow it works and the first two were awesome to play. These aren’t really remakes of the original. These are more retellings of history, but wrapped up in completely new games.
Final Fantasy VII Reveal will finish this story and should handle the final confrontation with Sephiroth and all the fallout that ensues (no spoilers). The trailer is magnificent, which is to be expected. It is of course coming to PS5, but also to Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2 and PC.
Pre-orders are open now, at least for PS5 owners. Those who order before launch will receive two in-game summoning spells. A Premium Edition is also planned, which will allow users to play the game a day before the official release. It comes with an in-game accessory, more consumable items, and access to upcoming DLC. That’s right: there’s story DLC coming our way at some point, so this remake of a 30-year-old game will seemingly never end.
This isn’t the only Final Fantasy game about to be released. We recently had some hands-on time with Final Fantasy Resonance and I came away impressed. It’s a throwback to old-school turn-based RPGs that’s extremely enjoyable to look at, even though it started life as a mobile title. This one comes out on October 22.
