The iPhone 18 Pro will not benefit from a dual-layer OLED display like that of the iPad Pro, with overheating being the main obstacle to its introduction.
The iPhone uses OLED for its display technology, and rumors have circulated that Apple will make changes to improve brightness. A regular leaker with a mixed history insists it won’t happen anytime soon.
According to a post published Monday by Weibo leaker Instant Digital, the iPhone 18 Pro will not have dual-layer OLED for the display.
Dual-layer OLED refers to what is better known in the Apple catalog as Tandem OLED, used by the iPad Pro. Essentially, instead of using one OLED panel, the system uses two, one stacked on top of the other.
As OLED is a self-illuminating display technology that does not require a backlight, stacking panels increases the amount of light emitted while minimizing waste. For consumers, this means a much brighter screen.
Dual-layer OLED as a limitation savior
Tandem OLED can also be a benefit to the iPhone by making it perform better outdoors. The Instant Digital article explains how the iPhone 17 Pro didn’t do a great job of maintaining brightness outdoors.
Part of the problem is thermal management, as the screen can help the iPhone heat up and possibly choke in hot conditions.
For the leaker, a dual-layer OLED approach would be beneficial because it would allow for a much brighter screen, while generating less heat. Achieving this goal would make the iPhone easier to use in the sun, without fear of strangulation.
As for the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple is still determining display panel suppliers. Regular suppliers Samsung Display and LG Display are in the lead, but BOE isn’t doing well enough to supply the high-end models.
While Weibo leaks aren’t generally considered very accurate, with Instant Digital being among the biggest, we can’t dismiss the rumor as just an obvious prediction. Others have discussed the idea in the past, with the timeline aligning with this rumor.
In August 2025, there were rumors that LG Display was working on tandem OLED technology for use in a future iPhone. At the time, a source claimed that the screen could arrive in 2028, far too late for the iPhone 18 Pro.
