Audio attenuation can be annoying, but it serves an important purpose.
Android Auto is your car’s phone companion, mirroring apps, messages and maps on your built-in screen. Your audio is also mirrored, with music and notifications delivered to your car’s speaker system. You may notice that, from time to time, Android may automatically lower the volume while you are driving.
This behavior can be annoying, but it is usually intentional. Rather than a mixture of sounds trying to compete with each other, Android Auto will try to prioritize when you receive alerts and notifications. This behavior is not permanent and should usually resolve itself after a second or two, although this is not always the case, depending on its cause.
Why does Android Auto keep turning down the volume?
Prioritization is why Android, and by extension Android Auto, will automatically turn down the volume. It is a focus system that prioritizes a particular application over another for a limited time only.
Here is an example. You’re listening to music, so that’s your main focus while playing. However, you will then receive an SMS notification. Android makes sure you don’t miss this notification. It briefly reduces the volume of your music so that the sound of your notification can be heard clearly.
This is called audio ducking. This has been an Android feature since version 8.0. While it’s not a universally loved feature, it exists for clarity, letting you hear when important notifications or alerts appear without too much impact. It is designed to be temporary and should only impact your audio for a few seconds.
A rarer cause of the problem, however, could be Android’s hearing safety features. Again by design, and introduced with Android 14, Android will attempt to protect your hearing by tracking loud audio and automatically lowering the volume for you if you listen to it for too long. Android will tell you if it does this automatically, and it’s a feature and not a bug.
You can turn off the media volume limit setting if this is the case, but it’s worth taking note of the risk and using a volume level that isn’t likely to cause damage to your hearing.
Navigation and notifications can trigger audio attenuation
Audio attenuation will be the most likely cause of Android automatically lowering the volume for most users. If so, your notifications and browsing will be the two main triggers.
Let’s first consider notifications. Android Auto will follow your existing notification settings. If an app is allowed to notify you on your phone, it will likely do the same through Android Auto on your car’s screen. Messages are one of the biggest culprits, from texting to social media. If you receive a call, all other audio will be muted.
Google Maps, or an alternative like Waze, will also cause audio attenuation. Driving directions, urgent driving alerts, or speed warnings—all of which can cause the audio volume to drop as your maps app takes focus for a brief moment.
This varies from app to app. What you hear and how long the volume goes down may change depending on the apps you use, for example between Spotify or YouTube Music. One thing you can be sure of, though, is that it will usually only take a few seconds before your sound returns to normal.
How to stop Android Auto from automatically lowering the volume
If you want to stop this behavior, you will need to turn off notifications for this app. This will prevent Android Auto from removing audio. The downside is that you won’t see the notification at all, which, unless constant volume is the priority, is probably unwanted behavior.
Some apps may let you change how they respond to audio attenuation, but not large apps. You can’t stop audio attenuation in Spotify or YouTube Music, for example. There are also no settings in Google Maps or Waze that let you determine app volume priority. You may have better luck setting one app to a higher volume than the other, but that won’t stop dodging. Even at a lower volume, it will still ask another app, like your messages app, to alert you.
Unfortunately, this just isn’t a bug. Audio attenuation is Android’s way of making it obvious when an alert is received so that you hear it without it overwriting your existing audio at the same volume. A partial workaround is to use Do Not Disturb mode which should stop all message notifications, although it won’t stop your notifications from your Maps app while you’re driving.
Are you still having problems? Check your car audio settings
The Android Auto experience should be universal no matter what phone you’re using, and customizing it depends mostly on your phone’s settings. That said, you may be able to access additional settings from your car that will impact your audio. There may also be a bug with a particular car model when connecting a device via USB or Bluetooth.
You can find reports on Reddit and online that report some of these unusual scenarios. For example, one Reddit user reported that the faster he drove, the lower his audio volume became. This turned out to be related to a speed-sensitive setting in their car’s audio system and could only be adjusted via the car’s settings.
If you think there’s a problem, it’s worth restarting your device, re-pairing it to your car, and changing the cable (if you’re hard-wired). This will resolve most issues if connectivity is the problem.
For most users, however, the automatic sound reduction is not a fault. Android tries to give you the ability to quickly register when there’s a notification or alert you need to know about while you’re driving. Turning it off is almost impossible but, in a pinch, Do Not Disturb mode will silence any messages or calls you have. Otherwise, you may need to look at your in-app or general notification settings to change the frequency of alerts to help control behavior.
