Memes spread like wildfire and there is no effective way to stop them. Once something (an idea, or anything, for that matter) reaches meme status, for many people it becomes the truth. Most never think about where the main idea comes from. AMD GPUs can be a great example of a “meme victim” as many users still take to social media and ask the big old question: Does AMD have bad drivers? Granted, there are real downsides to purchasing an AMD GPU, such as poorer ray tracing performance and occasional driver issues (like AMD’s 2023 Adrenalin driver causing performance issues), which tend to play nicely into the meme. But once you look at the bigger picture, it’s clear that the problem is to a large extent exaggerated.
Scrolling through Reddit, you’ll find many users defending AMD’s “honor” by pointing out that the driver issue hasn’t existed since the 2010s. In one thread, the top comment notes that the drivers aren’t horrible, instead scorning users who have just switched sides from Nvidia, failed to uninstall old drivers, and blame the emerging difficulties on AMD. It’s also quite possible that the meme will spread quickly, as players with negative experiences are more likely to express their frustration online, while those who are happy usually have no reason to write paragraphs on social media.
AMD had unreliable driver versions a decade ago, but guess what? This is common for Nvidia and AMD. In early 2026, Nvidia’s 591.76 driver update significantly reduced performance for several RTX 40 GPU users. Why hasn’t this become a meme? Plain and simple, it’s very likely that confirmation bias causes us to pay more attention to AMD’s missteps, while our brains simply don’t register Nvidia’s because they’re not as newsworthy.

Updating graphics card drivers makes your rig more efficient, unless you updated in January 2026 and ran an RTX 40 series card. If you did, you may have noticed dropped frames and surprise crashes after restarting your computer. Maybe this is an isolated case? Funny enough, once Nvidia rolled out a quick fix, it helped fix the fan issue, but caused the card to run at a lower voltage and clock speed, reducing the efficiency of some cards by almost 16%. While none of this has sparked a new meme, some players ignore new updates because they sometimes make older games run worse.
This isn’t a hit on Nvidia, mind you. Members of the AMD camp have had their share of problems lately. For example, drivers would refuse to install or crash certain titles like Apex Legends on specific GPUs, forcing users to jump through hoops to resolve the issue. It is nevertheless unfair to criticize AMD for missteps which do not differ much from those of Nvidia, since they are not limited to a single manufacturer.
Will the meme that AMD drivers are bad ever go away? Unlikely, but many users now understand that jokes about drivers are way out of proportion. Since the community is divided into teams, you may also find a fair number of people who think the Nvidia crowd is spreading rumors. Ultimately, the bad reputation may discourage some from trying AMD, but many gamers turn to AMD GPUs because they’re looking for a better performance-to-dollar ratio. And whatever your beliefs, AMD delivering on its promises is a more accurate meme.
