It’s not a Friday, nor the 13th, but the release date of the latest opus of the Friday the 13th frankness has a certain importance. Peacock has just announced that Crystal Lakethe prequel series, starring Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees, premieres October 15. It’s a Thursday, but it’s the first official track from Friday the 13th to debut in October.
That means yes, this Halloween you can celebrate with Jason Voorhees. Only a much younger one, less obsessed with hockey. At least that’s what we assume.
Since the first Friday the 13th film in 1980, until his 12th film in 2009, Friday the 13th the films all debuted between February and August, the majority in May or August. None of them even came out in the fall, let alone October, let alone two weeks before Halloween, with presumably a new episode every week. And with an eight-episode season on the way, you’ll be living at camp throughout the spooky season and even a little during the holidays. (The show could also air during the year’s finale on Friday, November 13.)
So what exactly are we going to look at? We don’t really know. Most of the details of the series are still rather under wraps. We know that Cardellini is Pamela Voorhees, Jason’s mother, who — 50-year-old spoiler alert — is the mysterious killer who started things at Camp Crystal Lake after the counselors left her son to drown. This series is expected to explore a bit about how Pamela got such murderous tendencies, her relationship with her young son Jason (yes, Jason is in the show), and, according to early teases, maybe even some carnage at camp.
Crystal Lake has had a very bumpy road on the way to reality, so whatever it is, we’re just relieved that it’s done, that it’s happening, and now we know when the killing will begin. Plus, the fact that it’s on Halloween makes it a little sweeter.
With William Catlett, Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins and Gwendolyn Sundstrom, Crystal Lake debuts on Peacock on October 15.
