The fourth developer beta of iOS 27 refers to an iPhone with two batteries, according to Macmonde. The new Battery Health strings include mentions of multiple internal batteries, instead of just one battery. Woozad confirmed that the mentions are in the beta version.
- “The batteries in this iPhone are working as expected.”
- “The battery health of this iPhone has deteriorated significantly. An Apple Authorized Service Provider can replace the batteries to restore their performance and capacity.”
- “The health of the batteries in this iPhone has deteriorated significantly and one of the batteries could not be verified as a genuine Apple battery. An Apple Authorized Service Provider can replace the batteries to restore their full performance and capacity.”
All terms in the Settings app on current iPhone models refer to a single battery, so the plural wording is curious.
Macmonde speculates that the wording refers to the foldable “iPhone Ultra” that Apple is working on. Previous rumors suggest that the iPhone Ultra will use two battery cells with capacities of 1,921 mAh and 2,962 mAh for a total of 4,883 mAh. Foldable smartphones typically have two batteries, one located in each half of the device. Apple will likely use the same design.
The iOS 27 strings suggest that the iPhone Ultra batteries could be separately repairable, so that a single failing cell could be replaced on its own. An option to replace a single degraded cell could reduce repair costs.
Apple’s iPhone Ultra is expected to debut in September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models.
