Onimusha: Way of the Sword sold over a million copies on its first day.
Capcom is on the rise thanks to recent successes like Resident Evil Requiem And Pragmats. His last game, Onimusha: Way of the Swordalso got off to a good start, selling over a million copies on its release day. The company is looking to capitalize on this momentum by revisiting franchises that have been dormant for some time.
“In addition to consistently releasing major new titles each year, Capcom is focused on reviving IPs that have not had a new title launch recently,” he said in a press release touting the sales figures of Onimusha: Way of the Sword. “The company strives to further maximize enterprise value by leveraging its rich library of content, including this title.”
This is the first new mainline Onimusha game since 2006. Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. Developing new intellectual property is important and it can pay off, as we have seen with Pragmats. But there’s a reason why developers and publishers continue to milk old franchises. Capcom already does this with the Okami continuation and Mega Man: double replacement. There are many other options that the company can look into.
For example, there hasn’t been a new Dino Crisis game since 2003. Fans have been clamoring for a fourth game for a long time. There has been some movement for this series lately. Capcom released a bundle of the first two games last year and brought them to Steam in February. Dinosaur Crisis 2 is also expected to arrive in the PlayStation Plus games catalog later this year. This seems like the kind of step you’d take to remind people how much they liked a franchise’s previous games before announcing a new entry.
Dead Rising could also be in the mix, following a recent remake of the first game in this series. I’d also like to see a new Lost Planet game, although it seems less likely than some of the other options. This series has been on ice since Lost Planet 3 arrived in 2013.
However, there are two sleeping giants in Capcom’s catalog that look ready to welcome new entries. Devil May Cry hasn’t had a new main game since 2019 The Devil May Cry 5while it’s been a decade since the last new Ace Attorney title. Devil May Cry is Capcom’s fifth most successful license – after Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Street Fighter and Mega Man – with 41 million copies sold. The Ace Attorney series has sold 15 million copies.
