Microsoft has said it doesn’t brick consoles as a form of punishment. He had to clarify that with a statement to Kotaku when the video game news and blogging website published an article in 2015 originally titled “Microsoft punishes Gears leaks by (temporarily) breaking Xbox Ones.” Kotaku changed it to “Microsoft punishes Gears of War leaks”, when Microsoft said its “enforcement action does not result in a console becoming unusable”.
However, what Microsoft can and does do is suspend or ban Xbox Series X consoles from using its services. With an all-digital future that console makers like Sony are calling for, this can be concerning, and banning an account can be as bad as breaking the console. Some examples of what can cause your Xbox Series Repeated violations may result in a console ban, depending on their severity.
What happens when Microsoft bans your Xbox Series X console?
When your Xbox Series X console is suspended, Xbox will notify you. Subsequently, the console will lose access to specific features, such as online chat and multiplayer. However, a banned console cannot use Xbox network features at all, including online multiplayer, streaming services, or the digital storefront. It also can’t download games because that requires connecting to Microsoft’s servers and verifying your license. Fortunately, anything you downloaded to it before the ban remains accessible until you delete it.
The only way to play a new game is to insert a physical disc into the disc version of the Xbox Series X, but if that requires an internet connection to complete the installation or play, you’re out of luck. You also cannot update the game or install any of its DLCs. A ban like this therefore affects those who own an all-digital Xbox Series X the most. In a fully digital future, bans will force people to get new consoles or jailbreak them (which we don’t encourage).
Microsoft may sometimes ban your account instead of your console. Sometimes both. An account ban means you lose access to your digital library, among other things like Xbox subscriptions and Xbox network connectivity. This can be devastating if you’ve spent thousands of dollars building your digital library. It’s even more devastating if your account and console are banned.
Are Xbox bans permanent?
A suspension will be automatically lifted once the suspension period is over, but just like Nintendo’s Switch 2 bans, a console ban is irreversible. However, don’t be alarmed by the thought that Microsoft is constantly banning consoles. While there is no concrete data on the subject, Xbox released a statement during the Xbox 360 era, when all console suspensions were permanent, indicating that console bans were issued to a small percentage of its 14 million users at the time. The main reason these Xbox consoles were banned was because they had “been illegally modified in order to play pirated games.”
Once your console or account is banned, no member of the customer service team can help you unban it. Even if you buy the console used and explain to Xbox that you weren’t the one who committed the violations, the decision won’t be overturned. Additionally, formatting the console with factory default settings will not lift the ban since the Xbox network will still recognize the console when attempting to connect to it and deny access.
