Your router has several Ethernet ports, but they may not all serve the same purpose.
The Ethernet ports on the back of your router may seem interchangeable. On some routers this is the case, but others offer a mix of ports with different tasks and maximum speeds. One can connect the router to your modem or fiber terminal, while the others provide a wired connection for PCs, consoles, and other devices in your home.
Choosing the right port depends first on what you’re plugging in, then how quickly the devices on both ends can communicate. Start with WAN versus LAN; speed comes next.
Start with the WAN or Internet port
If your router connects to a separate modem or optical network terminal (ONT), the Ethernet cable from that device normally plugs into the port on the router. PALE Or Internet port. WAN stands for wide area network; here it is about connecting the router to your internet service. For router/modem combo units, you won’t need this connection since a single device performs both functions.
Other Ethernet connections are generally Local network (local network). This is where you connect devices inside your home, such as a desktop computer, gaming console, smart TV, or network attached storage (NAS). Four LAN ports don’t give the router four separate Internet connections; they allow you to directly connect up to four wired devices (rather than using wireless connections).
Not all routers use this exact layout. Some have ports marked WAN/LAN which can perform either task, while other models use auto-sensing Ethernet ports instead of a dedicated WAN jack. If your router does not clearly identify a port for a Internet Or PALE connection, its setup guide, or its specifications should tell you which port to use.
The number of LAN ports you need depends on the number of devices you want to connect directly to the router. If you’re short on one, an Ethernet switch can add more connections without requiring another router. Just like an HDMI switch, these plug into one of your router’s LAN ports and provide additional ports for other devices. You might need more than you think, given that there are ways to use wired Ethernet without using long cables.
Not all LAN ports on a router offer the same speed
Once you consider the LAN side, the next question is speed. Some routers have identical LAN ports, while others (like the Netgear Orbi 870) mix gigabit and multi-gigabit connections on the same device.
Labels such as 1G, 2.5G, 5G And 10G refer to maximum link speeds of 1 Gbps, 2.5 Gbps, 5 Gbps, and 10 Gbps. A manual or datasheet may instead use Ethernet standard names such as 1000BASE-T for 1 Gbit/s, 2.5GBASE-T for 2.5 Gbit/s or 10GBASE-T for 10 Gbit/s.
For example, the TP-Link Archer BE900 shows why verification is important. It has four 2.5 Gbps LAN ports as well as 10 Gbps connections that can handle WAN or LAN tasks. There is no general rule that port 1 will be faster than port 4 simply because of its position or number.
If all of your router’s LAN ports support the same speed and none have any special functions, moving one device to another generally won’t make the connection faster. The choice starts to matter when ports have different speed ratings or roles.
A faster Ethernet port won’t make a slower device faster
A 10Gbps port does not automatically give every plugged-in device a 10Gbps connection. The rest of the Ethernet hardware should also support the fastest speed.
If your computer has a 1Gbps Ethernet adapter, connecting it to a faster multi-gigabit router port does not upgrade what your computer offers. Copper Ethernet hardware typically uses auto-negotiation to determine a link configuration supported by both ends. The practical result is simple: a 1 Gbps device cannot become 2.5 Gbps compatible simply because the router port is faster.
The opposite also applies. When connecting a computer with 2.5 Gbps Ethernet to a 1 Gbps LAN port, the slower port becomes the limiting factor. To establish a faster link, the router’s port, the connected device’s Ethernet interface, and the cable between them must all support the higher standard.
Cable names can be confusing here. Cat5e, Cat6, and Cat6A are cable categories, not router port speeds, so there is no choice of a “Cat6 port” on the router. Cable category, quality, length, and installation can all affect the Ethernet speeds that a configuration will reliably support.
Your Internet plan also isn’t necessarily the limit for everything you do over Ethernet. Two devices communicating inside your home (on a local network) do not need to send this traffic over your Internet connection. A PC and network-attached storage device connected via 2.5 Gbps Ethernet, for example, can transfer files over the local network at speeds much faster than your broadband connection is likely to support.
Before plugging a device into your router, check the port label, the speed supported by the device, and the Ethernet cable you are using. If every LAN port on your router is the same, the choice usually doesn’t matter. If not, use the fastest compatible port where the extra bandwidth will actually help. Check the router manual for all manufacturer-specific features.
