Are Android flagships cheaper to repair than an iPhone?

Phones tend to break. Whether it’s an iPhone, Google Pixel or Samsung Galaxy S, sooner or later you will have to go to the service center. This does not affect the durability of the phone or the reliability of the manufacturer. It’s just that accidents happen, and when they do, that’s when you start to understand the importance of warranties and repairability. This is exactly why insurance plans like AppleCare+ and Samsung Care+ exist.

However, for people who are not part of these plans, what does the cost of repair look like? Well, when we talk about flagships that cost over $1,000, the general trend is that Android users tend to pay less in repair costs than Apple users. Across all industries, Apple charges a higher premium for its repairs. It also tends to place software blockers on replacement parts, making them more difficult to install; Android, in comparison, places fewer obstacles, which reduces repair costs.

To paint a better picture, we compared the repair costs of today’s big three flagships: the iPhone 18 Pro Max, the Google Pixel 11 Pro XL, and the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. We’ll look at three main components: the screen, the back glass, and the battery. Since these are the most commonly repaired components, here’s a look at just how much they can drain your wallet.

Screen damage is the biggest exception

If you haven’t opted for AppleCare+, screen damage will be the biggest blow when it comes to repairing your new iPhone. The iPhone 18 Pro Max screen costs $379 to repair, excluding tax, shipping and labor. This cost only increases when all miscellaneous fees are taken into account, bringing the total much higher than Apple claims. Even if we only focus on the price Apple mentioned, it still represents 29% of the device’s MSRP, or $1,299.

On the other hand, if we look at Samsung devices, the cost is lower. Samsung officially lists the S26 Ultra screen repair cost as $289. That’s $90 less than what Apple offers. This price is also subject to taxes and labor, so the total bill may vary depending on the condition of your device and other factors such as the state you are in. However, since Apple includes the same miscellaneous costs, the repair bill for a Samsung user will be lower than that of an Apple user.

Finally, when taking Pixel devices into account, the trend becomes evident. The estimated repair cost for a cracked screen for a Pixel 11 Pro XL is $218. That’s $161 cheaper than Apple, and just 16.7% of the Pixel 11 Pro XL’s $1,299 price. This is the cheapest option of the three and puts into perspective how much cheaper Android flagships are to repair than an iPhone.

Battery and rear window have smaller gaps

While screens only need to be repaired when damaged, a battery will eventually deteriorate over time. This makes batteries one of the most commonly replaced mobile components. Apple recommends replacing the battery when its health drops below 80%. Google does the same by changing the battery health status from “Normal” to “Reduced” when the battery is below normal.

In such cases, Apple’s out-of-warranty battery replacement service is $129 for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Google is doing the same replacement for $88 for the Pixel 11 Pro XL, becoming the cheaper option. Although this price difference is not as significant as the screen repair, it still represents a difference of 32%. Samsung is excluded from this comparison because the prices of its batteries are not officially available. However, rough estimates for a Samsung battery replacement service range between $99 and $129.

Finally, the difference becomes slightly less obvious when we talk about rear window replacement. Here, the price variation is minimal: Apple does a rear glass repair for $159; Google does the same job for $149. Even lower? Yes. Differentiable? Only slightly. This is the component where the iPhone and Android will cost you about the same.

How Repairs Affect Total Cost of Ownership

Although this article focused on this year’s flagships, a similar pattern can also be found in last year’s devices. Similar to an iPhone 18 Pro Max, replacing the screen on an iPhone 17 Pro Max costs $379. Samsung is once again becoming the cheapest option, offering to repair your Galaxy S25 Ultra’s damaged screen for $279. Sticking to the model, Google offers the lowest cost of the three, repairing cracked screens for $249 for the Pixel 10 Pro XL.

This obviously shows that Android flagships are cheaper to repair than their iPhone counterparts, which speaks to the total cost of ownership. If you’re considering purchasing a new flagship this year, chances are you’re planning to hold onto it for an extended period of time. For the average person, this can take two to three years. During this time, you will eventually need replacements. If all the flagships you’re looking at have the same price, in this case $1,299, repair costs change the conversation.

Both a Pixel or Samsung will cost you less in the long run than an iPhone. Both devices have lower official costs for parts and also do not impose heavy software restrictions on spare parts. On the other hand, an iPhone, with its exclusivity, carries a higher repair bill than Androids, making it the more expensive option.
