Data centers are a hot topic, especially with AI creeping into almost everything. Artificial intelligence is built into smartphones, computers and smart TVs and requires a lot of energy. Every time a user performs a search using an AI chatbot like Claude, ChatGPT, or Copilot, the AI data centers use water and electricity to perform that search, which adds up to a significant amount of money. This may cause problems for local residents in the form of increased bills and potentially a significant amount of e-waste, but a study is looking to help reduce the amount of e-waste.
In an effort to reduce the amount of e-waste around the world, researchers are using old Google Pixel phones and turning them into clusters to power small-scale data centers. Scientists at the University of California (UC) San Diego are repurposing discarded Pixel phones and using the devices’ motherboards to create an inexpensive, low-carbon way to power cloud computing systems. The old hardware is taken from more than 2,000 phones that, when combined, will be powerful enough to serve as computers for education and research.
The goal of the project is to reduce the total carbon footprint created by discarded devices. Google and UC San Diego say these parts have the highest amount of embodied carbon, about 50 percent. The study found that a group of 20 devices produced enough energy to power a class of more than 75 students. The results are one step closer to proving that 2,000 phones could power 100 classrooms simultaneously. It is a valiant effort, but the project, as it stands, is too small to effectively combat the damage caused by the large-scale technology it is eliminating.
Data centers and the e-waste problem
Research by Google and UC San Diego aims to reduce the amount of e-waste caused by discarded smartphones. Collecting discarded Pixel phones and other devices can help the environment by reducing the way they pollute it. Devices that are not disposed of responsibly are considered e-waste due to their harmful carbon footprint. They can damage habitats and harm people, animals and plants by releasing toxic metals, corroding batteries and breaking down plastic.
A report shows that on average, people get a new phone every four years and throw away the old one. Their hardware, such as RAM, storage, and processors, can still function, making them useful in research studies. You may not care about your old device, but there are ways to reuse your old phone without impacting the environment. You can turn it into a security camera, use it for gaming, use it as a TV remote, or donate it to a good cause.
Data centers have also been linked to e-waste and increased data center emissions. Thousands of data centers in the United States examine servers, parts and computers and throw them away when they are no longer needed. If you want to do good for the planet, consider saving your phone and replacing it only when you absolutely need it, in an environmentally friendly way.
