Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said two game controllers were in the works.
Apple is reportedly on the verge of entering a new product category in the world of video games. As reported BloombergAccording to Mark Gurman, Apple has been working on iPhone gaming controllers for over a year, but they could instead launch under its Beats brand.
Earlier this month, one of Woozad Readers identified code in a macOS release candidate that referenced two hardware devices with game controller components, like dual thumbsticks, shoulder buttons, and D-pads. While Apple already sells third-party gaming controllers in its online store, including options from Backbone and SteelSeries, these two controllers, named T6502 and T1057, are being developed under the Beats brand, with engineering and product design handled by Beats executives, Gurman reported.
Gurman also noted that Apple could use the Beats brand strategically by experimenting with new products that interest it. Between the two brands, Apple could also release a Beats game controller that would be more affordable than its own brand because it could skip the typical premium materials and styling. On top of that, there could be a lot more aesthetic and cultural overlap between the gaming community and Beats product owners. However, Gurman did not mention a release timetable for Apple’s in-house game controller for iPhone.
