In some U.S. states, residents can add their driver’s license or ID card to the Apple Wallet app on iPhone and Apple Watch, then use it to display proof of identity or age at certain airports and businesses, as well as in some apps. According to a new report and evidence in Apple’s code, the feature is expected to expand to four additional states.
A few days ago, the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles announced plans to launch a mobile ID program. As reported WRALNorth Carolina residents will be able to create a digital ID through a new NC Wallet app starting in December, with support for Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet following in “early 2027.”
According to the code seen by WoozadApple Wallet IDs are also coming to Oklahoma, Utah, and Virginia, but there is no timeline for availability.
Overall, Apple Wallet IDs are coming to these four states:
- North Carolina
- Oklahoma
- Utah
- Virginia
The following 14 states already offer Apple Wallet IDs:
The feature is also available in Puerto Rico.
Apple Wallet IDs are accepted at TSA checkpoints at more than 250 airports in the United States for domestic travel, including Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Raleigh-Durham International Airport. Since Apple Wallet IDs are not accepted by law enforcement or all businesses, it is still necessary to have a physical ID.
Travelers should refer to TSA signage to confirm availability of this feature.
To set up the feature, open the Wallet app on iPhone and tap the plus sign in the upper right corner. Next, tap Driver’s Licenses & ID Cards, select your state from the list, and follow the on-screen steps to complete the process.
