Star City premieres this week on Apple TV, a spinoff of the space race drama For All Mankind. Here’s what early Star City reviews say.
Star City offers a new twist on the alternate history space race that feels very different from For All Mankind

Later this week, the Season 5 finale of For All Mankind will air on the same day as the launch of a new spinoff series.
Star City Premieres this Friday May 29 with its first two episodes, followed by weekly releases until July 10.
The new series follows the events of the alternate history of For All Mankind, but from the perspective of the Soviets. And early reviews indicate that this is a very different kind of show.
- JoBlo: “This isn’t just a rehash of what we’ve already seen… You’ll be surprised how unprepared you are for the direction the story is taking in this first season”
- The daily beast: “It’s a terribly dark complement to the streamer’s inherently hopeful success, though that’s not to say it’s any less. Rather, with a sadness as compelling as the optimism of its predecessor, it draws tense drama… from the story of men and women of the Eastern Bloc trying, at great personal and moral risk, to foster innovation under the thumb of authoritarianism.
- TV is good: “It’s both a space show and a spy show. It’s sort of For all humanity crossed with The Americans. There is so much more paranoia here.
These early reviews are largely positive, comparing the series favorably to its predecessor in many cases.
Radio Times even says it’s better than For All Mankind, although most reviews put the two series on equal footing or avoid making quality comparisons since each is so distinct.
Take from 9to5Mac
Personally, I’m glad to hear that Star City is nothing like For All Mankind. I was worried that the series wouldn’t have enough originality to merit a watch, but the pivot to a darker spy-fueled thriller sounds good.
This is also good news for anyone who has never watched For All Mankind. Five seasons is a lot to catch up on, and several reviewers have noted that you definitely don’t need to see For All Mankind before watching Star City.
