If you want to use your iPad as a laptop replacement, you need a good keyboard case for typing, using shortcuts, and of course, providing surface protection for your device. The most obvious first name to consider is Apple’s Magic Keyboard, but there is also another option called Logitech Combo Touch. This third-party keyboard-case hybrid stands out for its large trackpad and reliance on the iPad’s rarely used Smart Connector port for simple setup and power.
Both the Magic Keyboard and the Combo Touch make our list of the best tablet keyboards you can buy, and for good reason. There’s no objective best choice here, so it comes down to personal preference and price. Apple’s keyboards cost between $249 and $299 depending on the model, while Logitech’s are listed for $230 to $260, although they may be discounted, so the latter is almost always more affordable.
That said, Apple’s design allows the Magic Keyboard to work even without a solid surface underneath. The tablet sits on an arm that elevates it slightly above the keyboard, which some users say balances the weight better than a traditional kickstand, as with the Logitech Combo Touch. If you frequently use your iPad on the couch or while traveling, the extra cost may be worth it for the convenience and comfort.
Another important thing to note is that Apple makes the Magic Keyboard only for its iPad Pro and iPad Air. The base iPad model is only compatible with the Magic Keyboard Folio, which uses a more standard kickstand design.
Logitech Combo Touch offers more protections
While the Magic Keyboard wins in terms of flexibility, it doesn’t offer as much protection for your iPad. Apple’s cover leaves the sides of the tablet exposed, and if you want to pair it with a more studied case, you may quickly find that it may be too thick to use with the Magic Keyboard’s magnets. Some people carry their iPad in a sleeve to protect it, which can be a good idea, although it doesn’t completely solve the problem.
If you like the peace of mind that a traditional case provides, the Logitech Combo Touch is much closer to that idea. It covers the iPad on all sides, leaving room for an Apple Pencil or one of its cheaper alternatives. Even so, neither iPad case feels particularly durable, but if you’re worried and like me, you’ll probably feel safer with the Combo Touch.
