It’s a big weekend in America for Apple and racing. F1 returns to the United States with the Miami Grand Prix on Sunday on Apple TV.
Meanwhile, Apple and Porsche have collaborated on the design of an anniversary race car that will hit the California track, also on May 3.
Porsche announced today that it has worked with Apple to recreate the look of the iconic Porsche 935 K3 race car sponsored by the company in 1980.
Viewers will see the familiar wrap of a pair of Porsche race cars this Sunday during the IMSA race at Laguna Seca Speedway in California:
At the fourth round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship on May 3 at Laguna Seca, the Porsche factory team will feature a historic livery inspired by the Apple computer. The special coating is based on the Porsche 935 K3, which competed in major events in the 1980 season, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The unique design of the two Porsche 963s celebrates two milestones in 2026: the 75th anniversary of Porsche Motorsport and 50 years of the founding of Apple.
Oliver Schusser, who oversees sports at Apple, explains why the company worked with Porsche on the design:
“We have a long-standing relationship with Porsche, dating back to 1980, when a Porsche race car first carried the Apple logo,” said Oliver Schusser, vice president of Apple Music, Sports and Beats.
“This moment marked the beginning of a shared passion for innovation and creativity that continues to define our collaboration today. As Apple celebrates its 50th anniversary, we are proud to once again partner with Porsche on a design that pays homage to this original livery from 1980.”
It’s probably no coincidence that Apple’s new CEO John Ternus himself has personal experience driving Porsche race cars around Laguna Seca.
