Current owners of the popular RPG will get the upgrade for free.
The popular fantasy RPG series The Witcher was one of the big closing announcements during today’s Gamescom Opening Night Live presentation. CD Projekt Red has revealed that it is releasing a remake of The Witcher 3including its two previous DLC expansions. The studio is offering the revised game as a free upgrade to existing owners starting September 29. This also covers a free upgrade to Switch 2 for players who purchased the game for the original Switch.
In addition to the visual updates you’d expect in a remaster, there are also some notable system overhauls. The skill tree has been overhauled, as have the combat systems, including changes to the camera and targeting, as well as new finishers. Geralt’s movement and traversal will be smoother, and mount handling has also received some adjustments (although I would personally be sad if they managed to eliminate all of Roach’s fun and painful moments).
Earlier this year, CDPR announced that The Witcher 3 would get a third DLC next year in Songs from the pastand the team offered a short gameplay teaser at Gamescom as a postscript to the remaster news. Adding an expansion to a title that’s more than a decade old is pretty unusual, but perhaps it’s a way to throw a bone to fans who will be waiting at least until 2028 for the franchise’s next true sequel. And for an added jaunt, efforts are still underway to create a modern remake of the first Witcher game.
