Disney announces three new features for the Disney+ and Hulu apps

Disney+ and Hulu are on the path to a merger, and to that end, Disney just announced the rollout of three new features for app users today, with another one coming soon.

New Disney+ and Hulu features rolling out today, with Live Guide coming

The experience of accessing Hulu content in the Disney+ app just got easier starting today.

Indeed, Disney is launching new features as part of its continued integration of Hulu and Disney+.

• Profile linking: Hulu subscribers can now link their Hulu profiles to Disney+, bringing their watch history, watchlist, and recommendations to Disney+.
• Stream Hulu without a Disney+ account: Hulu subscribers can now use the Disney+ app to stream all Hulu content, even if they don’t have a Disney+ account. This is enabled through a unified MyDisney login.
• New avatars: Hulu avatars are now available for profiles in the Disney+ app, joining existing Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars-themed avatars

Disney also says that once profiles are linked, titles watched in the Hulu app will continue to sync with the Disney+ app.

Additionally, Disney+ will soon begin testing a Hulu-inspired “Live Guide” feature.

Disney says the new feature will serve as a platform to easily find live content at any time. It will include streams such as “ABC News Live and Disney+ Playtime for all Disney+ users and ESPN Networks for authorized ESPN Unlimited subscribers.”

Finally, Disney confirms that some of the key Hulu integrations not yet available in Disney+ will arrive later:

Additional Hulu features, such as Live TV and add-ons, are still available in the Hulu app and will come to Disney+ at a later date.

Following these announcements, Disney declared Variety that there are “no current plans to remove the Hulu app.”

However, with these changes, it is starting to seem inevitable. And this is especially true if the rumored Disney+ “super app” ends up materializing.
