iPhone 18 Pro gets new display upgrade with two benefits, report says

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to have the same 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch sizes as their predecessors, but a new report says these displays come with a key technology upgrade.

iPhone 18 Pro upgrades to LTPO+ display for improved power efficiency and always-on performance

A new report from The Elect says Apple is switching to LTPO+ technology for its iPhone 18 Pro OLED panels.

The report states that the iPhone 18 Pro’s panels are expected to be almost entirely produced by Samsung and LG. BOE reportedly wouldn’t be able to get Apple’s approval for this year’s flagships.

Industry sources cited BOE’s lower temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO+) technology capability as one of the main reasons for the setback. Compared to Samsung Display and LG Display, BOE is said to lag behind in terms of panel quality and manufacturing efficiency.

BOE was a key partner on the iPhone 17 Pro panels, so missing out on the iPhone 18 Pro is a setback for the company.

However, the report reveals that one of the advantages of the iPhone 18 Pro over its predecessor is the use of LTPO+ technology, an upgrade from the standard LTPO used in the iPhone 17 Pro.

LTPO is the technology behind the iPhone’s always-on display, as it allows dynamic adjustment of the refresh rate.

Conventional LTPO applies oxide materials to the switching of thin film transistors (TFTs). LTPO+ also extends the use of oxide to driving TFTs, enabling finer current control for OLED light emission and allowing displays to optimize operation based on surrounding conditions and usage environments, thereby improving battery efficiency.

The two expected benefits of upgrading to LTPO+ are:

  1. Improved energy efficiency for longer battery life
  2. More responsive adjustments, especially in dimly lit environments

This latest improvement could help reduce any flickering or grainy appearance in low lighting.

The Elect does not say whether the iPhone Ultra will also benefit from this new technology. We will keep you updated as additional details are revealed.
