You think frame generation improves performance, but it exposes a bigger problem

Frame generation has always been a controversial topic among gamers ever since Nvidia introduced it alongside the RTX 4000 series GPUs.

It started with a simple 2x multiplier, but fast forwarded to 2026, and we now have multi-frame generation and dynamic multi-frame generation with a multiplier up to 6x. At this point, I’m sure some of you are wondering if it’s worth splurging on a flagship card like the RTX 5090 when something like an RTX 5060 Ti or 5070 Ti can simply rely on frame generation to bridge the gap.

But trust me when I say that the more you use image generation, the more you’ll notice what it’s not doing behind the scenes. When you turn it on the first few times, you’re impressed by how your FPS increases, making you feel like you’re unlocking performance that your GPU shouldn’t have. Once the honeymoon phase is over and you start paying attention to how games actually feel, you realize that it’s just masking poor performance instead of fixing it. This is when you’ll probably turn it off and just stick to scaling to improve your frame rates.

Frame generation cannot hide CPU bottlenecks

One of the main reasons I started using framebuilding was to get around the fact that my aging Ryzen 9 5900X was holding back my RTX 4090. When you see your GPU sitting at 80-85% utilization at 1440p despite increasing your graphics settings, framebuilding seems like the perfect workaround to boost your frame rates. And to be honest, it works as expected by filling in the gaps with AI-generated images. The problem, however, is that the underlying bottleneck doesn’t really go away.

When you face CPU bottlenecks, you don’t just see a drop in average FPS due to less GPU usage. You also face issues like inconsistent frame times, dips, and stuttering that appear when the workload increases during demanding scenes. Frame generation doesn’t solve any of this because it still relies on the consistent delivery of these basic frames in the first place. So when your processor struggles, the generated frames can’t compensate for the base frames that arrive unevenly. This is why you can display over 200 FPS in MSI Afterburner and still maintain a choppy experience.

If you’ve never tried frame generation before, you probably think that FPS gains would automatically translate into a better user experience. Sure, the game feels smoother when you rotate the camera, but it doesn’t really feel like you’re playing at the frame rates you see on screen. There’s always a weird lag between your inputs and what you see on screen, especially once you start moving faster or reacting quickly. This is most noticeable in fast-paced games where timing and precision matter.

The reason for this is actually quite simple. Your inputs are always tied to your base frame rate, so the lower this number is, the worse your responsiveness and input lag will be, no matter how high your screen’s FPS is. This is why multi-frame generation shouldn’t be the reason you settle for a low-end GPU. You might get 300fps, but the responsiveness can still make it feel like you’re playing at 60 FPS. On top of that, frame generation adds latency, making the disconnection more noticeable, which is why competitive players avoid it at all costs.

It’s a great FPS booster, but not in the way you think

If there’s one scenario where frame generation really shines, it’s when your base frame rate is already high. I’m talking well above 60FPS. I’d say if you’re getting at least 100fps without frame generation, the game already feels responsive and the frame times are consistent enough that you won’t have to struggle with stuttering or input lag when you turn it on. At this point, you’re using it as a tool to improve good performance, not to compensate for low frame rates. This gives you better motion clarity on ultra-high refresh rate monitors.

Unfortunately, that’s not how most players use it. In fact, that’s not even how Nvidia markets this feature. The company likes to show how it can take a game like Cyberpunk 2077 from less than 30 FPS to 200+FPS with frame generation enabled. While this is impressive for a storefront, it creates unrealistic expectations by making image generation seem like a solution to poor performance. If that were the case, there would be no reason to buy a flagship GPU like the RTX 5090 for 4K gaming.

Take this FPS number with a huge grain of salt

Frame generation can significantly improve your frame rates, but smooth gaming performance isn’t just about having a higher number on your screen. It also depends on other factors, such as frame time consistency, input latency, and how responsive the game actually is. Frame generation only solves part of the puzzle, which is why it works best when these other factors aren’t a major issue to begin with. So the next time you try it, think of it as an FPS booster, not something that masks poor performance.
