macOS 27.2 adds touch gestures before the MacBook Ultra

macOS Golden Gate 27.2 adds code referencing specific new touch gestures in apps like Safari, Notes, Photos, and Quick Look, a possible sign that Apple is preparing to launch the OLED touchscreen MacBook, possibly called “MacBook Ultra.”

Code from the latest beta adds new gesture recognition tools to several Apple apps. Safari gets touch sentinel recognition, ‌Photos‌ has PXGTouchDwellGestureRecognizer, Notes has ICTouchPressGestureRecognizer, and Quick Look gets dragTouch functionality.

Although the code may apply to the touchscreen MacBook, it is also applicable to Sidecar. ‌macOS Golden Gate‌ brought full touch input to ‌Sidecar‌, which is the feature that allows you to use an iPad as a screen for a Mac. It’s possible that Apple is developing these ‌Sidecar‌ features, so it’s not a clear indication of a new Mac.

The touch changes began with the launch version of ‌macOS Golden Gate‌, which added pull-to-refresh gestures in Safari, Mail, and Calendar.

An ‌OLED‌ MacBook Ultra with touchscreen capabilities could launch as early as late 2026. The device is rumored to be thinner and lighter than existing models, and it’s expected to feature a Dynamic Island and Apple’s M5 Pro and M5 Max chips.
