Why Google Maps offers different routes to two phones for the same trip

Have you ever been ready to go somewhere for a walk or drive, typed a destination into Google Maps and noticed that the directions you get are different than what your spouse, co-worker or friend sees on their device? Google Maps may show different routes for the same trip on different phones, which could make you completely confused.

This can happen for several reasons, including route preferences you set in the app, traffic conditions at the exact time you’re leaving versus someone else, and even your device or account settings. Fortunately, Google Maps usually offers several route options. So if you want to take the same one, say if you and a friend plan to meet for lunch halfway en route to a cabin or campsite, you can coordinate by switching to one of these alternative routes that match. But don’t assume that if you use the same app you’ll always get the same directions.

Your app settings impact Google Maps directions

When you enter a destination in Google Maps, you can choose to travel by car, on foot, by public transport, by bike, and more. Usually you will have several route options, unless there is only one possible way to get where you need to go. The best option chosen by Google Maps will be highlighted in blue. Others appear gray, but you can click on them if you want to change. You can also preview each route before starting navigation.

The route you choose depends not only on your mode of travel, but also on the app settings. If you have it set to avoid toll roads and/or highways, your route will reflect this. If you selected a later departure or arrival time, the route will adjust based on traffic and the best option to get you there on time. You may also have changed Google Maps settings to favor fuel-efficient routes, which could avoid traffic jams or include secondary roads at slower speeds. This goes without saying, but if you still want the quickest route to be offered to you, you need to change this setting. Additionally, if you have enabled the Google Maps setting for vehicle type and chosen a hybrid or electric car profile, Maps can also take into account charging stations along your path. To view route settings, tap your profile icon in the top right > Settings > Navigation, then scroll to Route options. Or once you’ve selected a destination and route, swipe up on the navigation screen to customize travel options, like avoiding tolls or ferries.

Your phone settings may also play a role

If a phone’s location is slightly different, two people starting from the same locations may see different routes. A lesser-known Google Maps feature lets you use your phone’s camera to calibrate your location. Using this feature should help Google Maps locate you better and show the optimal route as well. If it’s a destination you travel to often and you’re signed in to your Google account, Google Maps may take into account historical data such as previously preferred routes, resulting in inconsistency. This can also happen if you’re using an older version of Google Maps while another phone has an updated version. Update the app and see if there is a change.

If it’s an older device that doesn’t have as many GPS antennas or receive as many GPS signals, some users have suggested that you might see different route options since your initial location isn’t as accurate. You probably won’t encounter this problem often. I tried with a few destinations from an iPhone 17 Pro and a Google Pixel 11 Pro, and both provided identical directions every time. But if you ever notice a difference, a quick settings check, app update, and cache clearing should result in synergy.
