Sony brings AI upscaling to base PS5

Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first games to support fast spectral super resolution.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has added AI scaling to the standard PS5. It deploys fixes for Marvel’s Wolverine And Ghost of Yōtei Today, this makes them the first games to support Fast Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) through new graphics options. SIE said the technology brings “notable improvements” to image detail and stability, adding that every PlayStation developer will be able to add QSSR to their games.

The company has offered PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling on PS5 Pro since the high-end version of the console arrived two years ago and it has continued to iterate on the technology. In a blog post, Sony says players and developers have asked if it’s possible to bring a similar option to the less powerful PS5.

QSSR came from a project Sony worked on with AMD. It claims it is now able to deliver AI scaling on PS5 thanks to “a streamlined neural network architecture” and “a hand-optimized implementation that maximizes performance.”

Mike Fitzgerald, Head of Technology at Wolverine Developer Insomniac Games said the technology “adds more clarity and pixel-level stability to our environments, bringing out additional details amid the bustling streets of Madripoor, the dense alleys of Shinjuku, and many other areas of Logan’s epic journey.”

QSSR is coming to Ghost of Yōtei the same day, Sucker Punch Productions released a complete edition of this game with a story expansion and a roguelike mode that is similar to The Last of Us Part 2There is no going back. People who already own the game can upgrade for $15.
