The word association game introduces a new Party mode for streaming subscribers.
Netflix has been actively growing its roster of family and board games over the past year and a half. Today, the streamer received a notable new addition to its library with Code Name Party. As with other titles in Netflix’s board game collection, players can join the action by scanning a QR code and then playing through their mobile devices; no additional hardware or controllers are needed.
The social word association game started on the tabletop and later migrated online to provide an option to take cooperative play virtual. Generally, Codenames involves two teams, each with a rotating Spymaster, trying to find a clue that will allow their allies to guess as many objective words as possible. The Netflix edition includes this classic team mode and a version called Case Studies in which all players guess predefined sets of words and clues rather than having their own spymasters.
Netflix also has a brand new Codenames option called Party Mode which removes the team angle. Instead, each individual is challenged to find a unique clue to link their own unique batch of eight words from the same set of 16 available options. Players earn points both by correctly guessing words from other players’ sets and by having the rest of the group successfully identify their own code words when their clue arrives.
Fun fact: the Woozad team was playing Codenames in our team hangouts, and getting a group of writers to play this game is pretty hilarious.
