Improved battery life is also a huge plus, while photographers are likely looking forward to the variable aperture update to the new iPhone’s camera system. Unsurprisingly, the well-reviewed Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra takes up the same space and is pretty close in terms of specs. The difference in physical size is negligible (Samsung is slightly larger) and both phones come with 12GB of RAM. The main difference is that Samsung offers a version with 16 GB of RAM. Apple fills this gap by offering a 2TB storage option, which is 1TB more than Samsung. In terms of chipsets, the iPhone 18 Pro Max has a hexa-core processor while the S26 Ultra features an octa-core processor. On paper, Samsung’s octa-core 2×4.74 GHz Oryon V3 Phoenix L, boosted by a 6×3.62 GHz Oryon V3, should offer better multi-core performance, while the iPhone should theoretically be better at single-core processing.
Perhaps the biggest difference between the two is in the camera department. The high-end Galaxy model may eclipse the new iPhone Pro in megapixels (200 on the main sensor, to be exact), but the iPhone 18 Pro Max has a physical camera with variable aperture that opens and closes. This could be a selling point for photography enthusiasts.

Whether they’re worth it is a much better question, but there’s no clear answer.
The pre-order price of the iPhone 18 Pro Max is $1,299, the same as the Samsung Galaxy S26 with 256GB storage and 12GB RAM. If you have the money and want one of the most powerful phones on the market, it’s worth it. However, given that the standard Samsung Galaxy S26 and the now “last-gen” iPhone 17 Pro Max are still amazing devices and cost less, upgrading to the latest versions from both manufacturers is technically not a big enough jump to justify the price.
You haven’t thought about other manufacturers either. For example, the latest Google Pixel 11 Pro isn’t exactly a massive upgrade over its predecessor, but it can deliver similar performance to the newest iPhones and Samsungs — for $200 less. Overall, the spec improvements in 2026 weren’t that big, and the real generational leap is more likely to happen around 2027. So if your phone still works, you might be better off waiting a year or so to get yourself a flagship that justifies both the hype and associated costs.
