An SSD offers incredible speed benefits, but the cost per gigabyte is much higher. Here’s how to make the decision.
A 256GB SSD and a 1TB HDD may seem like two versions of the same purchase, but choosing between them involves making two different decisions. One is the technology that stores your data. The other is how much data you should keep.
For a computer’s primary drive, a 256GB SSD is usually the best choice, provided it has enough space for your files. SSDs are much faster than hard disk drives (HDDs), which affects boot times, application loading, and day-to-day responsiveness. A 1TB hard drive gives you a lot more space and generally costs less per gigabyte, making the capacity more attractive when storing large game libraries, photos, videos, or saves.
A 256GB SSD is generally the best system drive
The difference in speed comes from how each drive reaches your data. A hard drive stores data magnetically on rotating platters, with a read/write head that moves to the location it needs. An SSD stores data in flash memory and retrieves it electronically, without waiting for the mechanical parts to fall into place.
This distinction is especially noticeable on a system drive, where starting Windows and opening applications requires frequent access to storage. Faster storage reduces the time the computer spends waiting for these requests, which is why switching from a hard drive to an SSD can make even an older PC more responsive.
SSDs have a few other practical advantages. They operate quietly, without moving platters or read/write heads, making them better suited to the shock and vibration a laptop or portable drive may encounter.
The problem is the 256GB part. Windows 11 requires at least 64GB of storage, so a 256GB SSD comfortably meets the minimum OS requirements. That 64GB figure, however, is a floor and not a recommendation for how much space you’ll actually need or need. Programs, Windows updates, downloads, and your own files all compete for what’s left.
This makes 256GB much easier to live with if you primarily browse the web, work with text documents, stream media, and keep a lot of your personal data in cloud storage. This is also why our current laptop recommendations consider 256GB as a feasible minimum for Windows and Mac systems, while 512GB or more makes more sense if you store a lot of files locally. Large creative projects and modern games can quickly require 1TB or more to stay comfortable.
The SSD type is also important if you are upgrading an existing computer. A 2.5-inch SATA model may be a simple option for an older PC, while most newer systems support much faster NVMe drives. A 1TB hard drive makes more sense when space matters
A 1TB drive has about 3.9 times the advertised capacity of a 256GB drive. If you’re deciding between these two exact options, that’s a substantial amount of storage to give up for speed.
Large games can consume tens or even hundreds of gigabytes, while RAW photos, video projects, and local media libraries can continually grow. Backups are a special case where the goal is usually to keep a lot of data, rather than having access to every file as quickly as possible. A 256GB SSD can handle these tasks, but faster storage can’t make up for the files that don’t fit.
This is where hard drives still make sense. They typically provide storage at a lower cost per gigabyte, so they are well suited for backups, media collections, and other workloads where capacity matters more than minimum access times. A hard drive is slower than an SSD, but playing stored video or keeping an archive doesn’t have the same performance requirements as running an operating system.
There is also a physical trade-off. The platters and moving head inside a hard drive can produce noise and make the drive more susceptible to shock. That said, these drawbacks are greater in a laptop or portable drive than in a desktop computer that spends its life sitting under a desk. The larger size of a hard drive doesn’t really matter in a desktop computer unless you’re going for a nice minimalist build.
If your computer primarily contains documents and files synced to the cloud, you may never be able to use the extra space provided by a 1TB hard drive. But if you regularly delete games or move projects elsewhere to free up space, the speed advantage of the 256GB SSD may start to seem less useful.
You can use SSD and HDD together
Fortunately, an SSD and a hard drive don’t have to compete for the same work. A desktop computer that can accommodate multiple drives can use a smaller SSD for Windows, applications, and frequently accessed games or project files. Then pair it with a larger hard drive to handle backups, media, and other mass storage.
This setup takes advantage of what each technology does well. The SSD handles files where quick access changes the feel of the computer, while the HDD provides relatively inexpensive space for data that just needs a place to live. You can, for example, keep your most played game on the SSD while having other titles ready to swap out on the hard drive.
An external drive can serve the same role if adding another internal drive is impractical. Top-rated portable SSDs retain much of the speed advantage of SSD storage, while an external hard drive generally gives you more capacity for your money. Either option can give more space to a laptop with a smaller internal SSD without replacing that drive.
If your computer only has one drive, the decision is simpler. Choose the 256GB SSD if that amount of space comfortably covers what you keep locally and you want a more responsive system. Choose the 1TB hard drive if 256GB requires you to constantly delete or move files and if storage capacity matters more than speed. When in doubt, go with SSD, as it’s easier to add an external drive for more storage later than replacing the system drive.
