In August, Anthropic added the ability to let Claude log into your Gmail account so the AI can send and respond to emails for you. The goal here is likely to make it even easier for AI to handle your normal day-to-day tasks without having to jump through additional hoops that might be necessary with other third-party services. Should you trust Claude to respond to your emails? Well, to quote Ian Malcom from “Jurassic Park,” “your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, that they didn’t stop to think if they should.”
A 2025 Stanford study found that data from conversations with AI chatbots can be used as training material for the company’s models. Anthropic has updated its terms of service to allow this, and while you can opt out, the feature is enabled by default. This means that anything you put into the chatbot, such as email information, could one day be used as training material. Even if you disable training on your chats, there is still a risk of AI hacking that could allow bad actors to access this information. This is a huge privacy issue, but even if you’re not worried about the privacy implications, there are other things to keep in mind before giving Claude full access to your inbox.
This can do the trick, but there are hiccups
Even if you don’t worry about the privacy implications, it’s still important to know how well Claude handles the tasks you give him. Based on reports where people let Claude log into their Gmail inbox, the general consensus seems to be that Claude handles most tasks quite well. It can easily browse the inbox and even identify the emails you are looking for. However, one person reported that the AI actually signed off in the emails using “cheers,” something it had never used before. So there’s definitely some overlap between other users and AI training here.
As with anything, there are good ways to use AI for different tasks, and Claude is perfectly capable of sifting through your emails and even responding to them accordingly. What AI isn’t capable of, however, is replicating your voice in emails, which could make your automated responses sound generic. Keep in mind that AI can still hallucinate and letting Claude take control of your emails without any monitoring is definitely not a good idea, as you won’t be able to detect problems before they appear.
