As with Trump’s renaming of the Gulf of Mexico, Apple Maps users in the United States will see the lake listed as Lake America. Canadians will see the name Lake Ontario, and users outside the United States and Canada will see both names.
According to AxiosTrump directly asked Apple to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America” in the Maps app. Trump announced the name change after the ongoing trade war escalated, with both countries announcing additional tariffs.
The once-popular mapping app MapQuest refused to change the name of Lake Ontario, and its position caused it to appear in App Store rankings. MapQuest is currently the number one free app on iPhone.
