AirPods with cameras could improve spatial audio head tracking

Apple AirPods with cameras could improve spatial audio on iPhone and other Apple devices by detecting the position of the screen the user is looking at. Details about this feature were found in macOS Tahoe 26.7 code and shared on the Woozad forums by member Mactracker.

Sensors in current AirPods power a spatial audio head tracking feature, and the cameras could go further. The code suggests that camera-equipped AirPods will find the physical screen the wearer is viewing content on, by comparing the direction of the screen with the direction estimated by the AirPods’ motion sensors.

AirPods may be able to identify laptops, displays, smartphones, tablets and TVs, even detecting multiple screens and limiting the sound to the one the user is looking at. Screen detection will work behind the scenes and can stop when the wearer is moving.

Devices with Face ID already use ‌Face ID‌ sensors to aid head tracking, but if the user also has AirPods with cameras, the AirPods will prefer camera input over ‌Face ID‌.

The code also references a server-based visual reasoning feature, further reinforcing rumors about Visual Intelligence support. AirPods would send camera data to Apple’s servers for “visual intelligence” requests.

The ‌macOS Tahoe‌ 26.7 release candidate released in August leaked a long list of references to unreleased Apple products, including AirPods with cameras. Although several references to AirPods have been found, rumors suggest the product won’t launch until fall 2027.
