It will still appear as Lake Ontario to Maps users in Canada.
Google renamed Lake Ontario in Maps following President Trump’s executive order to change its name to Lake America. Apple Maps hasn’t updated yet, but it adopted the new Gulf of Mexico nickname ordered by Trump last year when all that nonsense went away, so it probably won’t be long. It’s all so stupid.
In a blog post, Google explained that it was updating Maps “to reflect name changes in official government sources.” In the United States, that source is the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), which officially changed the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America earlier this week. The company provided a similar explanation when it changed the Gulf of Mexico label to “Gulf of America” for U.S. users. Map users in the United States will see “Lake America”, Canadians will see “Lake Ontario” and people elsewhere will see both, which surely won’t cause any confusion. “These updates follow our long-standing policy regarding bodies of water whose names vary by country and are starting to roll out now,” Google said.
