Graphics card prices have skyrocketed in recent years, driven by technology trends like cryptocurrency mining and AI. To save money, some people have turned to the second-hand market in hopes of purchasing a new GPU at a lower cost. Also before doing so, it is worth understanding that there are certain PC parts that you should never buy used. We say that a GPU is one of them, especially depending on its age and condition.
Your old GPU might also be enough for now. There are applications that can help speed up an aging graphics card. If you’re worried about seeing signs that your GPU is failing, make sure it’s not just running slowly.
If you decide to buy, be sure to read the rankings of the major GPUs, from worst to best. A little extra research can make a big difference.
A used GPU might not cost much less than a new one

GPU prices fluctuate widely in the new and used markets, especially as demand exceeds supply. Reviews of eBay listings from last year indicate that, depending on when you shop, the price of a used GPU can be only slightly less than a new one.
Discussions on Reddit indicate that this is not just a recent problem. In a post four years ago on Reddit’s r/buildapc community, a user claimed that the typical used price of an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti was, at the time, only about $40 less than the price of a new unit. Although this is just an anecdote, it reflects what people saw at the time.
You might always assume that saving some money is better than nothing, but not always. That extra $40 difference in the Reddit discussion meant getting a new product with a warranty. This is a valuable degree of protection and peace of mind that you often can’t get when buying a used GPU.

Previous owners can have a major impact on the future performance of a used GPU. For example, some people use GPUs for cryptocurrency mining, which puts a lot of strain on the cards by running them at high power for long periods of time. The jury is out on how much cryptocurrency mining affects a GPU’s performance, but we do know that it can cause problems in some cases, particularly if the previous owner modified the card.
Keep in mind that a GPU is also a complex machine and its components can wear out over time. At the very least, you may need to clean or replace parts, like the cooling fan blades, to keep it working properly. Depending on the age of a used GPU and how it has been maintained in the past, you may also need to replace thermal pads or power cables. This can increase the total cost of a unit which, again, may not cost much less than a new GPU in the first place.
Naturally, if you are considering buying used technology online, you should research the seller to confirm that you are buying from someone with a good reputation. Even then, a seller may make difficult-to-verify claims about the condition of a GPU.

Buying a new GPU brings some peace of mind. As with any new piece of technology, you can generally expect it to work as advertised. If not, the cause is likely a defect or other factor covered by warranty.
You can’t be sure that a used GPU will meet your needs. If you buy one, be sure to run tests that will help you get the most out of your PC. This may include playing a variety of games that stress the unit.
If you have a problem, you can usually return a new GPU to the store for a refund. Used GPUs, however, are highly dependent on the return and refund policy of the platform you purchased the unit from. Of course, if you bought it from an online auction site, or some other way that involves buying directly from an individual seller, you may be out of luck.
