MacBook chargers are the unsung heroes of everyday computing, quietly doing their job until they suddenly stop. Whether you use a third-party USB-C charger for your MacBook or the one that comes in the box, it’s one of those small but important accessories that you plug and unplug from your laptop countless times a week without ever thinking about it. But just like laptops, charging accessories also experience a lot of daily wear and tear, which can eventually take a toll on this piece of hardware.
A broken power adapter isn’t just a minor inconvenience that ruins a productive afternoon at the coffee shop. When it comes to the high-voltage electricity needed to run a MacBook, any physical damage can translate into a legitimate safety risk. And continuing to use a compromised charger puts your MacBook at risk of catastrophic electrical failure, which could also potentially cause harm to you or your surroundings.
If your adapter is on its last legs, you don’t necessarily need to pay Apple tax for an official replacement (although it does give you that exclusive assurance). It’s good to have a backup charger in mind, but knowing the warning signs of a failing MacBook charger can help you determine if you actually need one to begin with. Here are five of the most common.
Frayed wires and exposed shielding
A quick glance at your charger cable is the easiest way to spot impending disaster. The cord connecting the power supply to the MacBook undergoes many physical stresses over its lifespan; Daily bending, tight wrapping, being chewed by pets, and getting crushed by office chairs will inevitably break the soft, flexible outer sheath. However, once this rubber casing is opened, it leaves the delicate internal wiring and metal shielding exposed to the elements. This is extremely problematic and should never be ignored.
Grabbing a roll of electrical tape or even a bit of superglue may seem like a neat trick, but in reality, it’s not a good solution to this problem. The problem is that neither can restore the sturdy insulation needed to carry electricity safely, nor repair the internal cable strands that are already breaking. This should go without saying, but exposed wires increase the risk of electric shock, especially if the cord rubs against bare skin or against something conductive, like metal desk legs. Additionally, a broken outer shell can even allow moisture to enter the cable core, paving the way for a summary short circuit.
As soon as any internal metal shows through the pristine white casing of a cable, the charger needs an immediate retirement party. A frayed cable poses a fire hazard and a threat to your laptop’s motherboard due to the risk of a short circuit. Choosing a brand new replacement is, unfortunately, the only surefire way to ensure proper insulation and avoid the threat of an unexpected electrical fire.
Bent, loose or damaged plug pins
These bendable metal prongs on the back of the charging brick have a simple job: lock securely into a wall outlet. Unfortunately, violently pulling the brick from the wall from across the room or accidentally dropping it on a hard floor can easily bend these connectors. If a prong appears bent, jamming it back into a socket may bend it further or cause an uneven connection. You can try straightening them with tweezers or pliers while they’re unplugged, but there’s no guarantee that things will be like new again.
A perfectly healthy MacBook adapter plug (and, really, any type of plug) should slide smoothly into a power outlet and seat completely against the faceplate. On the other hand, any noticeable resistance, wobble, or need to wiggle the brick just to get a load indicates structural damage. Bent or wobbly pins likely won’t stay flat; they might be harder to push into the jack and they might not make proper, consistent contact inside the jack. This problem often causes dangerous arcing or overheating of your charger, which can damage it or even damage the MacBook itself. If your charger has mangled pins, now is a good time to ditch it for a new one so you don’t have to worry about the risk of sparks flying out of the wall.
Inconsistent charging and power drops
Sometimes the most dangerous chargers appear perfectly fine on the outside but completely fall apart on the inside. An adapter that randomly stops and starts charging indicates that something is wrong under the hood. So if your MacBook is plugged in but the battery charging icon keeps turning on and off, the power flow is probably disrupted. There could even be internal problems, like damaged wires or a faulty voltage regulator.
This erratic charging isn’t just an annoying quirk that makes it difficult to top off your laptop battery. When electricity flows erratically through your MacBook, sudden voltage spikes and drops are harmful to its internal power management systems. Give it enough time, and these wild power surges can even fry a motherboard.
Equipment unable to maintain a constant and reliable flow of electricity has completely lost its key safety features. Although random power drops may seem like a harmless problem at first, they actually indicate a dying power supply that might surge out of control when you least expect it. Getting a new, reliable adapter is the best way to protect your MacBook’s expensive internal components from destructive voltage spikes.
Severe damage to laptop connector
The little tip of the cable that actually plugs into the MacBook gets a lot of use every day and deserves careful consideration. If you’re wondering whether you should charge your MacBook with MagSafe or USB-C, it doesn’t matter much here. The real problem is that this constant action can wear down the metal contacts, warp the housing, and attract tiny debris that can literally ruin the connection. The shell around the plug is plastic only and can easily crack under accidental impact or impact, leaving the fragile connector pins totally exposed.
A broken connector rarely fits easily into the charging port, often forcing users to hold the cable at an odd angle just to get a charge. This is a good way to notice if there are any problems with yours. Jamming a bent or warped plug into your MacBook is a great way to damage it, as it can easily distort the charging port, which can lead to its own set of costly repairs. Worse yet, a loose connection at the laptop’s chassis is likely to generate massive electrical resistance, creating dangerous heat buildup (and potentially damaging nearby internal components).
Take a moment to inspect your laptop’s connector on your charger, and if it shows signs of melting, burning, crushing, or any other problem, stop using it immediately. Generating excessive heat while you use it
Power adapters naturally get a little warm when powering your laptop. Even feeling a slight increase in temperature during an intense video editing session is completely normal and expected. However, there is a huge difference between a lightly toasted power brick and one that looks like it just came out of the oven. While there are many cool things you probably didn’t know your MacBook could do, connecting it to an overheating charger shouldn’t be one of them.
This excess heat suggests that the internal components are failing: they are either creating tons of electrical resistance or losing the ability to dissipate this thermal energy. This can also happen if a charger is not adequately ventilated, if it is exposed to sunlight, or if you use a charger that is not intended to charge a MacBook. More importantly, an electric brick that is too hot can potentially burn you, and is an active and serious fire hazard.
Make sure you never ignore a piece of hardware that begins to serve as a small heater. If your power supply becomes very hot, unplugging it immediately and then letting it cool on a hard surface is the only wise decision here. Purchasing a brand new charger is much less expensive than dealing with the catastrophic and costly consequences of a house fire.
