Sony, Bose, and Apple usually grab the headlines when it comes to high-end headphones, but many other audio manufacturers also offer great products. A good example is Sennheiser, a German company known for its professional audio equipment, including microphones, wireless systems and studio monitoring headphones. Sennheiser also offers a line of consumer headphones, many of which have features like active noise cancellation, strong battery life, and add-on app customizations.
You can find several different models of Sennheiser headphones for sale on Amazon, so how do you know which ones are best? We wanted to know that too, so we decided to dig into user reviews to determine which units actual product buyers prefer. We also wanted to keep costs under control, so we limited our searches to headphones under $350. We also didn’t settle for something below average just because it was cheap.
In total, we were able to offer five pairs of Sennheiser headphones that Amazon shoppers love. While no product in this roundup gets a perfect five-star rating (out of five) in user reviews, it’s still the Sennheiser cans and heads that most buyers like the most for one reason or another. Below we highlight the pros and cons of each entry, so let’s get straight to the list.
Sennheiser Momentum 4 wireless headphones
It’s hard to say no to a fantastic pair of noise-canceling headphones, even if they’re a little pricey. The $300 Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless Headphones deliver warm, bass-driven sound that pushes bass where it’s needed most, especially when listening to genres like rock, rap, hip-hop, and electronic dance music (EDM). One Amazon shopper was so blown away by the sound quality that he claimed the Momentum 4 sounded better than flagship models from consumer staples like Sony and Bose. »
Speaking of Amazon, more than 13,500 people have left reviews of the Momentum 4, earning the headset a 4.1 star rating out of 5. When it comes to noise cancellation, the Momentum 4 uses an adaptive (ANC) system that does a solid job of dampening most unwanted sounds except for the most guttural bass sounds. Several blurbs on Amazon have praised the ANC, but a handful of users say they prefer the Sony WH-1000XM5 for noise cancellation.
For those interested in customization, the Sennheiser Smart Control app offers a comprehensive set of options for fine-tuning your Momentum 4, including audio presets, a graphic equalizer (EQ), and a unique feature called Sound Zones that automatically changes EQ and ANC settings based on where you are (using geofencing). It may not be the most budget-friendly Sennheiser model, but the Momentum 4 is one of the company’s best pairs of Bluetooth headphones.
Sennheiser Accentum Wireless Headphones
If $300 is a bit out of your budget, Amazon shoppers have also flocked to the $190 Sennheiser Accentum wireless earbuds. Over 1,000 users have reviewed the product, giving these noise canceling cans a 4.1 out of 5 stars. The Accentum is a notch below the Momentum 4 (M4), and here’s what you’re giving up: more powerful ANC, better comfort, wired playback, and improved battery life (50 hours on a full charge for the Accentum, versus 60 hours of battery life for the M4).
The Accentum’s native tuning is actually pretty close to the M4’s performance. Users can expect a bass-boosted sound profile, but the Sennheiser Smart Control app will also let you change audio presets and create your own equalizer. Reviewers seem to love the sound of the Accentum, with one Amazon shopper saying the audio quality is dream-worthy, retaining every sound detail even at very low volumes.
One downside is that you can’t turn ANC on or off; you can only toggle between noise cancellation and transparency (to broadcast external sounds so you can hear what’s going on around you). Another user wasn’t too happy with the earbuds’ lack of an auto-off timer and inconsistent device switching. It’s possible that Sennheiser will address at least some of these drawbacks with future software updates, but these headphones are more than solid in their current state.
Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless Headphones
What would a headphone selection be without a fan-favorite pair of wireless earbuds? Sennheiser has us covered here too, and Amazon shoppers really like the $300 Sennheiser Momentum 4 wireless earbuds. (Based on more than 1,100 reviews, the earbuds earned 3.9 stars out of five.) Sure, some balked at the price, but at least one buyer said that not only is the sound quality great, but they actually prefer these earbuds to the vaunted Apple AirPods.
These are fighting words, Apple and its competitors should take notes. Out of the box, the M4 headphones deliver a bass-focused sound profile that delivers an exceptional experience for most music genres, but is particularly beneficial for fans of rock, rap and hip-hop. These in-ear models also offer solid ANC performance, but are best at canceling out mid-range noises, like chatty co-workers and loud mechanical keyboards. And when it comes to battery life, you can expect just over seven hours of playback when the earbuds are fully charged and an additional three charges when the case itself is recharged.
Other notable features and settings available through the Sennheiser Smart Control app include audio presets, graphic equalizer, customizable touch points, and much more. The M4 earphones even support Auracast, which at least to some extent future-proofs them.
Sennheiser HD 490 PRO wired headphones
Owning a great pair of open-back wired headphones gives you a leg up as a sound engineer — or any type of audiophile, really — and according to Amazon shoppers, the $349 Sennheiser HD 490 PRO headphones are to beat. It’s also the highest-rated product on our list, earning 4.7 out of five stars from over 300 reviews. By ditching the closed design of the Momentum 4 and Accentum, the HD 490 PRO is able to provide a more immersive soundstage, which is beneficial when working with music software and mixing interfaces.
The HD 490 PRO comes with two pairs of earbuds: one for production and the other for mixing. If you like headphones with a luxurious feel, the velvet covering used on the Producing ear cushions will be a treat. What really shines here, according to Amazon shoppers, is the sound quality…what you want from your headphones, right? User reviews highlight an excellent listening experience, bright and clear across the spectrum and particularly strong in the bass range.
One thing to note: the HD 490 PRO does not have ANC and only supports wired playback. It also doesn’t include a microphone: these headphones are intended for listening only and were designed as such. But if you’re an audiophile or audio engineer who needs a high-end everyday speaker, look no further.
Sennheiser HD 280 Pro wired headphones
Let’s say you need to outfit a DIY recording studio with decent monitors for your musicians to use. If you’re not looking to break the bank but still want something that sounds good, your friends on Amazon are raving about the $86 Sennheiser HD 280 Pro headphones. More than 11,400 users have left reviews, and the combined comments have earned the HD 280 a 4.5 out of 5 star rating.
Similar to the HD 490 PRO, these are wired headphones without ANC system. You’ll get a bit of noise isolation from the fit alone, but don’t expect headphones that will silence a bus motor. That said, the soft ear cushions are nice for longer wearing sessions, and the cans come with a 4.30-foot TRS cable for inserting into a recording interface or connecting to a gaming controller. The HD 280 is also a great example of the adage “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” The latest edition of these studio headphones has been on the market since 2016, but some Amazon reviews date back to 2003!
One user said it best when he said that these headphones are the benchmark for a great everyday listening experience. The same user also gave the HD 280 Pro high marks for passive noise cancellation, noting that the unit does a great job blocking out distractions even without ANC. Although you may experience different sound quality depending on the device you’re connected to (this came up several times in the reviews), the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro is a solid buy.
How we chose these Sennheiser headphones
In putting together this list of Sennheiser headphones, we set a price limit of $350 to ensure we can cover a wide range of features without completely breaking the bank. From there, we focused on models that received at least 300 reviews on Amazon, with the majority of buyers leaving four or five star ratings.
Finally, as mentioned above, we wanted to create a list with a variety of options (as well as price points). Whether you’re looking for open-back or closed-back headphones, a set of wireless cans, automatic noise cancellation, or even headphones that can rival AirPods (according to device owners themselves), you’ll find at least one option on this list. And you can be sure that it will deliver solid sound quality.
