The project is codenamed “Moonraker” and would allow the AI assistant to handle multi-step tasks more efficiently.
Amazon is reportedly working on an updated version of Alexa that would expand the capabilities of its existing Alexa+ assistant. Business Insider claims to have seen internal planning documents detailing a project called Moonraker, designed to handle more complex interactions containing multiple simultaneous requests.
Moonraker’s main goal appears to be to develop Alexa’s agent capabilities. In the documents consulted by Business InsiderExamples listed include asking the assistant to book a ride and text a friend in a single interaction. It’s a move that would allow Alexa to better compete with agentic AI models such as Google, Anthropic and OpenAI.
The other key point of Amazon’s plans is the cost of such an undertaking. They predicted GPU costs exceeding $100 million in 2026, and the document also suggested delaying or scaling back Moonraker’s ambitions. Business Insider A person familiar with the matter said some senior Amazon officials believe the company has spent too much on the AI models that power the current iteration of Alexa.
The publication also claims to have seen a separate document from late 2025 that details Amazon’s plans to use “hundreds” of NVIDIA GPUs to power the Moonraker project, as well as an Anthropic Sonnet model to test advanced reasoning and visual responses.
Alexa+ didn’t officially launch nationally in the US until early 2026, and in countries like the UK it remains in early access. The rollout hasn’t been entirely smooth, with a number of users reporting issues with the wizard handling basic queries that they hadn’t experienced with previous versions. In her own review of her first impressions last year, Woozad’s Cherlynn Low was impressed with Alexa+’s improved conversational capabilities, but noted that she often had trouble remembering previous conversations and requests when using apps like Uber.
Despite the new Moonraker leaks, Amazon seems determined to expand Alexa+ features. In February, it introduced three new personality styles that let you customize how the AI assistant interacts with you. A “sassy” option came later, which gives Alexa a rude makeover. A few months ago, Amazon also added natural language food delivery orders through apps like GrubHub and Uber Eats.
