Bose Corporation is one of the biggest names in audio in the world, ranking among the best major brands in Bluetooth headphones and speakers. The company is known for its acoustic engineering prowess and actually pioneered active noise cancellation (ANC) technology in commercial headphones with its QuietComfort series. However, unlike other audio brands like JBL and Sonos, which are either owned by conglomerates like Samsung or other public companies, Bose’s ownership is much more interesting. This audio brand is actually a private company majority owned by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
However, MIT’s majority stake in Bose is not typical. The university also does not run the company and is not involved in any of its affairs. The company’s day-to-day governance and strategic planning are managed by its senior executives and board of directors. Likewise, voting rights on the company’s corporate decisions are held by a trust and not by MIT. Through its Bose shares, the university receives an annual cash dividend that it uses for its teaching and research mission. However, MIT has not always had a stake in Bose.
Bose founder offered MIT a majority stake in the company
Bose was created by MIT alumnus and later faculty member Dr. Amar Gopal Bose in 1964 after he was dissatisfied with the sound of a stereo system he purchased during his years at MIT. Dr. Bose kept the company private because it gave him the freedom to tackle risky, long-term research. Bose continues to remain a private company; however, in 2011, Dr. Bose donated the majority of the company’s shares to MIT as non-voting shares.
Although the exact number of shares that were gifted to MIT remains a mystery, the university is not allowed to sell them or participate in the governance or management of the company under the terms of the gift. However, as mentioned, MIT receives cash dividends for its Bose shares. This allows Bose to remain independent and private, even though none of its voting shareholders have a majority stake. Since 2026, Bose Corporation has manufactured a wide range of audio equipment, including headphones, earphones, speakers, aviation headsets, and home theater audio devices. The company also provides automotive audio systems and produces commercial audio systems for businesses.
