Today, almost all monitors, computers, and laptops use HDMI or DisplayPort as their connection ports, but two cables have paved the way for both: digital visual interface (DVI) and video graphics array (VGA). If you wanted to connect a display to your computer, these are the two main cables for doing so. Nowadays, such cables, especially VGA, are considered a novelty, since they were once popular TV ports, now obsolete.
VGA predated DVI and is an analog interface that allows computers to connect to display devices such as a monitor. The signal is not as strong over long distances, with longer cables weakening it. The cable comes with two ends, both with 15 pins that attach to both components. The ends are screwed or tightened to prevent them from becoming easily unplugged or detached.
DVI was released several years after VGA and provides a digital interface, but can also include analog, with high quality video resolution. This is more like an HDMI connection because it uses a digital signal rather than an analog signal. This makes it more powerful and able to travel longer distances and connect to multiple displays. Even newer technology such as displays and computers may have DVI ports, but it’s always good to check in advance.
What exactly is VGA
Technologies such as VGA cable are becoming less and less visible on modern devices. They were a powerhouse back then, but with the advancement of the digital age, they have become a dinosaur. They are still useful if you have older computers and monitors that still work with VGA ports or if you are in a professional or office environment.
IBM introduced the VGA cable in 1987. It was found on televisions, monitors and computers as it was a major component for connecting devices. Resolution quality could range from 640 x 480 pixels, but was later expanded to support higher resolutions up to 2048 x 1536 at 75 Hz depending on the VGA cable and device. The downside of the VGA cable, since it is an analog system, is that it is not able to provide audio support between devices. If you wanted to listen to something on your device, you had to connect an external audio system or speaker.
As one of the few old-fashioned computer accessories that were once essential, a VGA cable is outclassed and surpassed by modern cables such as HDMI, DisplayPort, and even DVI cable. Although you can always get an HDMI to VGA adapter to connect to modern devices. It was once the standard bearer for connecting devices, but its time has come and it is now a legacy cable for older technologies.
What exactly is DVI?
When DVI appeared in 1999, it revolutionized gaming by providing sharper images and sharper views on high-definition monitors. Its combination of digital and analog outputs makes it a more versatile and powerful cable than its predecessor. This makes DVI a great choice for anyone who wants better image quality up to 1920 x 1200 pixels. However, if you want better resolution, a dual-link cable supports up to 2560 x 1600 pixels.
Like the VGA cable, it connects devices using two ends that have multiple pins and a locking mechanism. It is also incapable of transmitting an audio signal to the speakers, as it simply provides video output. DVI is also a great choice for older computers and monitors, but you may be able to find newer devices with DVI ports. If you have an old DVI cable lying around, you can even get an HDMI DVI cable to connect to an HDMI port.
In the past, connecting monitors and PCs was done via VGA or DVI. Today, modern technologies such as laptops, gaming consoles and televisions use cables such as HDMI and DisplayPorts to connect to external devices.
