Hopefully you weren’t planning on queuing up for the PS5 launch window title.
Destruction AllStars was one of the first waves of games available when Sony released the PlayStation 5, but it doesn’t appear to be sticking around for the console’s next act. Sony sent out an alert confirming that the live service game is no longer available for purchase and that its servers have been shut down. “Due to ongoing technical issues, Destruction AllStars’ multiplayer services on PlayStation 5 consoles will remain offline and will no longer be available,” the email states, making for a strangely sudden finale for the game. Anyone who owns the title can access single-player content until November 25, and Destruction will take place after that date, with the exception of single-player arcade modes, which Sony notes may have limited functionality since all servers will be down.
The game, which featured Twisted metal-chaotic vehicular arena battles, was a free title for PlayStation Plus members when it launched in February 2021. While most online multiplayer games rely on a constant stream of new content or battle passes to keep players around, this project went pretty quiet less than a year after its release, making its ending a little less surprising. However, there does not appear to be any advanced message from Sony or developer Lucid Games regarding the project’s cessation, which is unusual. News first circulated about this change based on PlayStation notifications seen by players. It seems likely that Destruction AllStars never found a lasting audience in the still-saturated games-as-a-service market.
