E Ink displays have earned their place among our most commonly used gadgets, especially when it comes to e-readers, and this is mainly due to their low power consumption and good visibility under strong sunlight. There are also benefits related to eyesight and long reading sessions, since E Ink displays can reduce eye strain in certain situations. Even with these qualities, they still have significant limitations, especially when used in other applications.
Much of this disadvantage comes from the way these panels create an image. This is because instead of continually refreshing pixels like an LCD or OLED screen, E Ink moves particles in groups to form what you see on the screen. This process uses much less power, but also slows down transitions, making more complex animations more difficult. With videos or games for example, the difference becomes obvious as soon as you start using it.
The newest color models have expanded the potential of E Ink displays, but they also come with new quality compromises. For this reason, we have separated some disadvantages of E Ink that explain why these displays remain limited to e-readers and niche devices and have not become as popular as OLED or LCD in smartphones or other displays.
E Ink displays have much slower refresh rates
Probably one of the biggest drawbacks of E Ink is its refresh rate. While LCD and OLED screens can refresh the image at a rate of 60 times or more per second, E Ink must rearrange physical particles to form each new image. Even with newer panels that promise 60Hz refresh rates, like the accessory that adds an E Ink display to your phone, there may be visible tearing or ghosting (more on that later), so it still doesn’t behave like a traditional LCD or OLED display.
In practice, for anyone used to smartphones or modern monitors, this low refresh rate makes animations or screen scrolling less fluid. Videos and games usually suffer the most, as they rely on that high refresh rate to display motion naturally. On the other hand, when reading books or performing tasks where you leave a static image on the screen for an extended period of time, this E Ink problem does not have much impact.
Colors still can’t compete with LCD and OLED screens
One of the biggest advances in recent years has been color E Ink displays, and while these new panels have greatly expanded what they can display, they still lag behind LCD and OLED displays. E Ink’s Kaleido technology can reproduce thousands of colors, but traditional displays work with millions, making everything more vivid, with a wider tonal range and good contrast.
The inclusion of colors in an E Ink display can also reduce image sharpness. On some panels, the resolution available for color content is lower than that used for black and white text, creating a distinct difference in small details. Even in normal text, you may notice differences in quality, and this is also one of the biggest drawbacks of the Kindle Colorsoft for many users.
For anyone who enjoys reading comics or needs to analyze documents in greater graphic detail, this difference in screen quality may become more apparent. Additionally, because it has to generate more colors, a Kindle Colorsoft battery typically doesn’t last as long as traditional models, which can be a problem for anyone expecting the legendary battery life of traditional E Ink devices.
E Ink devices may be more expensive
Another disadvantage of an E Ink display is its high cost, and its price can deter many people looking for devices with this type of display. The Kindle Paperwhite, for example, costs around $160 for a version with built-in ads, and more advanced models can increase that significantly. In fact, the high initial investment is one of the main disadvantages of purchasing a Kindle, especially since these devices focus primarily on reading, which can reduce their perceived value when compared to all-purpose devices.
If we consider one of the more advanced versions of E Ink, like the Kindle Colorsoft, the comparison becomes even clearer. The 16GB model costs $250, putting it in the same price range as Samsung’s Galaxy A17 5G smartphone. At this price, the phone offers a Super AMOLED display, cameras, 5G connectivity and access to millions of apps for streaming, communication and other activities. The Kindle, on the other hand, focuses much of its value on the reading-optimized E Ink display.
Ghosting and screen flickering can be distracting
Ghosting is one of the most noticeable limitations on an E Ink display, especially when browsing quickly. After changing pages, parts of the previous content may continue to appear very faintly in the background. Instead of providing a completely clean transition like LCD or OLED, the panel may contain small, temporary artifacts, which attract attention when there is a lot of text or high-contrast elements.
To reduce this effect, many e-readers perform full-screen updates at regular intervals. Amazon’s e-reader, for example, offers a Page Refresh option among its reading settings. This is definitely one of those Kindle settings worth changing, as it forces a full update every page turn and helps remove residual text that might remain visible after refreshing.
Temperature can exacerbate this behavior. Since E Ink relies on the movement of particles suspended in the fluid, cold environments can slow down updates and increase the chance that residual images will remain visible. Most E Ink panels are designed to operate within a relatively limited temperature range, and if they fall outside of that band, the visual stability you get can be significantly affected.
