Many technological devices can be relatively profitable investments. For example, after using a device for a few years, you can trade it in or sell it to get a few dollars back when upgrading to a new model. However, while some tech devices generally retain a high resale value, this is not the case for every tech device you might own. There are some tech devices that depreciate in value quite significantly (and quickly), making them less likely to attract buyers if you try to resell them.
Various factors can influence a device’s loss of value shortly after a user’s initial purchase. Some devices quickly become obsolete as upgrades become available every year. Other types of devices are so personal that buyers don’t want to buy a device that someone else has already used. While it is important to understand that loss of value does not universally prevent someone from reselling these types of devices, it is rare to make much money from them on the resale market.
Wireless headphones lose value due to hygiene and other issues
Wireless headphones are frequently listed among the tech devices you probably shouldn’t buy second-hand. So it makes sense that you shouldn’t expect a buyer to pay much if you’re trying to sell your used pair either.
Wireless headphones are quickly losing their value for several reasons. Hygiene is a key element. While it’s technically possible to clean wireless earbuds, few people feel comfortable reusing a pair that has already spent a lot of time in someone else’s ears.
Additionally, batteries in wireless headphones tend to degrade over time. Since the batteries are sealed inside the device, it’s not like a user can simply replace them. Plus, as new generations of wireless earbuds hit the market frequently, someone shopping for a pair might be more inclined to spend a little more for something reliable and new. Again, none of this is to say that it’s technically impossible to sell a pair of quality, good condition wireless earbuds, but you shouldn’t expect to sell them for a good price.
Some recent smartphones do not sell very expensively
Not all smartphones depreciate quickly. This is a topic you should look into in more detail if you’re trying to figure out if it’s worth trying to sell your used smartphone. Depending on the model, you may be able to find a buyer who will give you a fair offer.
That said, some smartphones lose their value fairly quickly due (at least in part) to the fact that consumers have determined that they don’t offer much added value in the first place. Take the iPhone 14 as an example. Generally speaking, consumers indicated that they did not think the iPhone 14 line represented a significant innovation over previous iPhones. This perceived lack of innovation has led to a relatively rapid depreciation in the value of the iPhone 14 compared to other generations. Essentially, when enthusiasm for a new device is rather low to begin with, demand in the resale market is also likely to be low.
Smartwatches and other wearables lose most of their value within a few years
Like headphones, used smartwatches and other wearable devices have hygiene issues that can deter buyers from paying a lot for a used device. Just like headphones, their small batteries don’t stay in perfect condition for very long. Given their nature, wearable devices are also subject to a lot of wear and tear which can prevent used devices from offering great value to anyone considering purchasing one of these pieces of technology.
People who own smartwatches actually tend to upgrade their devices every few years. One of the main reasons why they do this is that the performance of such a device can start to decline after about a year of use. Since the types of people who use these devices tend to prioritize new models fresh out of the box, it can be relatively difficult to find a fitness tracker enthusiast who would be willing to spend a lot of money on a used device.
Again, the information presented here shouldn’t discourage you from trying to make some money on a device you no longer use. As long as you know it still technically works, you could potentially sell one of the tech items here to someone looking for a good deal. Just keep in mind that you’re more likely to find someone willing to take it off your hands if you price it accordingly.
