Get ready for six stars, two playable characters, and one hell of an adventure.
Perhaps the most anticipated video game of all time is almost upon us. Netflix offered an exclusive 26-minute extended preview of GTA VI for six hours, before the trailer was released on YouTube and other platforms ahead of the game’s release on November 19. Now that we’ve had our most in-depth look at Vice City and the surrounding bayous and forests of Leonida, what new information can we glean from a potential open-world installment that’s poised to break all sales records?
It turns out…a lot. Considering as Grand Theft Auto VI It might take you upwards of 80 hours, so it’s no surprise that Rockstar North has cooked up a bunch of new gameplay mechanics. Key gunplay improvements, deeper carjacking, an all-new respect style system, and a plethora of refreshed mini-games are just the tip of the deadly iceberg. Let’s get into all the details of GTA VI lingering look that you may have missed.
Can you swap between characters in GTA VI?
You certainly can. Just like large parts of GTA Vyou can easily switch between Rockstar’s version of Bonnie and Clyde in the sequel. There’s a good example of this at 18:41 in the extended look, when the action shifts from Jason to Lucia, as the two leads attempt to deal with the chaos of a high-octane chase sequence from their red convertible.
It also appears that some missions will only allow you to play as one character, making you choose between the two crooks or forcing the decision on you in a cutscene. There’s a brief moment at 10:50 in the extended trailer where Lucia and Jason are offered a job by their criminal friend Brian Heder, while having drinks at a glitzy rooftop bar called Effluvia in downtown Vice City. The pair briefly discuss who will accept the mission before Lucia gets up, leaving Jason with the gig and his Pißwasser (that’s the GTA brand lager, in case you forgot).
Expansion of previous GTA systems
A true “blink and you’ll miss it” moment occurs 14 minutes into the long stare. As Jason does his best to keep police cars and a whirlwind at bay with an automatic rifle while hanging out in the back of a getaway vehicle, you can briefly glimpse the return of six wanted stars. This is significant, because GTA V capped its Wanted system at five stars. This makes Los Santos’ masterpiece stand out in the GTA pantheon, with each other 3D iteration adding an additional sixth star (signaling SWAT-like NOOSE forces, in the case of GTA IV).
This reinforced level of research is joined by a new criminal profile system. Detailed in IGNthe preview of, it apparently acts a bit like Red Dead Redemption 2The Honor system, even if it promises to be more nuanced. The site claims that GTA VI does not consider all crimes equal; retaliating against an angry NPC who acts like the aggressor will not be judged as harshly as going on a disorderly killing spree.
The game will also give you the ability to avoid potentially violent encounters by de-escalating situations with on-screen dialogue options that will allow you to either mock or speak kindly (another throwback to RDR2). Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson said IGN that “consistent actions can impact how the world reacts to you and how the narrative unfolds,” while discussing GTA VIHe’s the big new mechanic. Apparently, throwing trash in a trash can or feeding one of Leonida’s many creatures can help improve Lucia or Jason’s criminal profile.
Combat Changes
Rockstar has remained tight-lipped about changes to GTA’s shooting and melee systems. Still, eagle-eyed fans may have spotted a few clues as to how GTA VI evolves the franchise’s trigger-happy skirmishes. The first major adjustment is that you can finally switch between two guns on the fly, without having to dip into a weapon wheel. You can see this as Lucia makes her way around an outdoor shooting range at 18:31 of the extended preview, with the bank robber seamlessly swapping between a high-powered rifle and his pistol.
There are other subtle developments of GTA VThe fighting pattern of if you squint hard. Weapons seem easier and quicker to pick up, as seen when Jason smoothly equips an enemy’s Duke 556 assault rifle during a hectic office firefight near the end of the trailer. Aiming also seems to be smoother overall. At various points in the latest trailer, Mr. Duval and Ms. Caminos took down goons in a very slippery style – although it’s hard to say how much of this is due to the studio using auto-aim during recorded gameplay sequences. Oh, and it looks like you can now wield some weapons one-handed. Watch Lucia waste fools at 9:21 as she brandishes a shotgun in one hand while the other lugs around a big bag of money/guns/narcotics.
Additional activities galore
Grand Theft Auto has continually set the bar for open-world mini-games and side activities. Darts! Golf! Pool! Tennis! Triathlons! Blowing all your criminal winnings on the seedy Los Santos Stock Exchange! Although it is not clear whether GTA VThe “BAWSAQ” exchange returns in Rockstar’s Miami-inspired sequel, GTA VI don’t have fun with new side activities that you risk losing all the hours at.
Throughout the trailer, you can see Lucia and Jason engaging in all sorts of relaxing (or sometimes exhilarating) pastimes. Basketball, dirt bike racing, scuba diving, timed target practice challenges, stock car racing, kayaking, and backyard wrestling with iconic WWE finishing moves can all be spotted at different times. If the standard which GTA V with its mini-games is something to do, each of these activities will rely on solid mechanics which will make it a pleasure to play again.
There’s also a new mini-game that makes carjacking a little more interesting. While Franklin simply had to press Triangle/Y to break into any vehicle scattered around Blaine County, there’s a moment at 6:07 where you can see Jason initiate a “Slim Jim” mini-game that prompts him to use a window punch to enter the car via a counter timed with the right stick. Nelson also told IGN that more sophisticated vehicles with electronic locks require key cloners before you can steal them (it seems clear that you won’t be able to hot-wire every car in the country). GTA6). And if you jump to around 8 minutes, these highly stolen rides will be easier to ride around town, thanks to a new HUD map in the game where buildings now appear in 3D.
Nods to other Rockstar games
There’s a boatload of sly nods to older Rockstar titles in the GTA VI extended look trailer. Let’s quickly review them. A scene where our mortal duo and Brian Heder are on the water suggests a vision RDR2The fishing mini-game is back. Speaking of drinking, there’s an earlier moment where Jason’s reckless driving results in a guy dangling from the top of a bridge, perhaps hinting at a return of GTA IVRandom encounters with strangers. Going back even further in the timeline, a moment where Lucia is training hard on the bench press is a clear nod to GTA: San Andreas‘muscle strengthening mini-games.
The reminders follow one another: RDR2style face coverings accessible via an item wheel for thefts, and a new animation that sees the main duo hiding their guns behind their backs before entering a store. Continuing Arthur Morgan’s Old West quest, the addition of on-screen icons that appear to highlight the duo’s health, wardrobe, and vehicle status will be familiar to Red Dead fans. GTA VI also has binoculars in the game – although looking at a dude through a window who is clearly using his VR headset in a super shady way is a far cry from Morgan spotting an elk on the horizon.
Unconditional GTA V fans will also appreciate some returning features. There’s a nod to this game’s Lifeinvader social media as an optional live stream appears with a click of R3 as Lucia races away from the cops with an unwitting hostage hanging from the trunk of her stolen vehicle. There’s also an in-game TV commercial featuring wild boars and deer frolicking in the Leonida countryside, suggesting that Trevor-style hunting missions are about to return. More importantly, in the trailer’s final moments, you can see Jason inherit Michael De Santa’s slow-motion filming and Max Payne 3 killcam shots. Even more intriguing, GTA VI appears to introduce a new system for targeting vitals: red dots indicate lethal hits, while yellow markers around joints apparently give you the ability to disarm enemies non-lethally, a la GTA IV.
