This background Android component silently manages several features you probably use daily.
If you dig deep enough through your Android phone’s apps list, you might come across Android System Intelligence, which seems both extremely important and incredibly vague. Of course, there is a Disable button nearby.
Android System Intelligence (ASI) is a Google system component that enables a suite of context-aware features in Android. On Pixel phones (which have a particularly long resume), these include live captions, now playing, smart auto-rotate, screen attention, app predictions, copy and paste and smarter notification actions. Range varies by device.
ASI runs within Android’s Private Compute Core, which was introduced in 2021 with Android 12. Its machine learning features don’t have direct network access, so Private Compute Services serve as a bridge when they need updates from the cloud. Google says ASI and Private Compute Services collect crash logs, diagnostics, and device IDs for app analytics, while usage and diagnostics collection can be turned off.
What Android System Intelligence actually does
ASI is not an application that you use. It’s the plumbing behind the features you use. Now Playing can detect music playing around a Pixel, Screen Attention can prevent the screen from dimming when you view it, and Smart Notification Actions can add useful action buttons directly to notifications. Features like Search Live, Live Translate, Assistant Voice Typing, and App Search can also rely on it.
This broad scope also explains the seemingly intrusive permissions ASI might request. According to Google, ASI uses system permissions to provide intelligent predictions, and access to contacts can be used to suggest people you communicate with frequently. But the company doesn’t explain on its current ASI support page why the component might request location access. This does not mean that every ASI feature requires every permission, and restricting one permission or feature is a more targeted solution than disabling the entire component.
The privacy setting is a little more interesting than the app’s ominous name. Private Compute Core components cannot access the Internet directly, and Private Compute Services handles network requests on their behalf. Pixel owners can even view a network usage log after enabling Developer Mode.
There’s one more thing worth picking apart in 2026: Android System Intelligence is not Gemini. Google’s Gemini Nano models run in Android’s separate AICore system service.
What happens if you disable Android System Intelligence?
Normally you cannot uninstall ASI as an app you installed yourself, as it is a system component, although Android phones may allow you to disable it in Settings > Apps. The route varies by manufacturer.
Turn it off and your phone shouldn’t suddenly forget how to be a phone. In January 2026, Android Authority reported that critical functions of the phone remained operational while ASI-based features were lost. This can include features like Now Playing, Live Caption, and other pop-up tools that are normally hidden on a Pixel until you need them.
Google doesn’t say that disabling Android System Intelligence will make Android unstable, nor does it provide a universal list of everything that stops working on every Android device. This leaves some uncertainty. Disabling the UPS is not like removing a vital organ. This is more like closing a utility closet without first checking the switches inside.
For most people, leaving ASI enabled and disabling the problematic individual feature or permission is the cleanest option. If your objection is to Google’s broader presence on Android, GrapheneOS goes much further, although some apps may still have compatibility issues.
If Android System Intelligence keeps stopping, Google’s troubleshooting tips are more practical than disabling it permanently: restart the phone, install any available updates, force stop the app, and clear its cache or data if necessary.
