Okay, here’s some inside information for you: Woozad’s approach to gaming coverage has recently changed to focus less on writing incremental ads. This should include new characters for popular hero shooters, but the rules are there to be broken. Some things are just too cool to pass up. This is the case for Overwatch’s next hero, D.Mon.
Blizzard first revealed D.Mon in 2018 in an animated short. It was unclear at the time whether any of D.Va’s MEKA Squad cohorts would ever join her in the roster of playable characters. But the silhouette of a robot in a teaser image for all the heroes Blizzard planned to bring to Monitoring this year brought some excitement, and the 53rd playable character (and 15th tank) turned out to be D.Mon.
Much like Junker Queen – who has an Ana-style anti-healing ability and can pull enemies towards her a la Roadhog – D.Mon seems to be a bit of a combination of other characters, albeit with a new twist. The designers were naturally inspired by D.Va. Although she cannot fly, D.Mon can use boosters (which have a fuel bar) to dash horizontally and deal damage from a distance with machine gun ability.
When his robot (which is nicknamed Beast, fans actually) is destroyed, D.Mon will eject from it and remain alive. She can remechanize by triggering an ultimate ability, which she can develop by dealing damage with a heavy machine gun. Rather than falling from the sky like D.Va’s robot, Beast reconstitutes himself around D.Mon.
The reflexes of professional players. The MEKA pilot’s instinct. 🦾

There’s also a hint of Reinhardt here. The beast has a shield and its main attack involves a melee weapon, in this case a power sword. In addition to slashing his opponents, D.Mon can thrust the sword forward to push them back.
The sword is the basis of D.Mon’s in-mech ultimate, a sweeping attack that grants him superhealth and amplifies damage taken by enemies, much like Zenyatta’s Orb of Discord. To be most effective, this ultimate seems to require more team coordination than D.Va’s self-destruct, which can wipe out an enemy team single-handedly. So the two mechanical characters are quite different from each other.
More importantly, D.Mon and Beast look really sick. I wasn’t too surprised to learn that Blizzard took inspiration from FromSoftware’s Gundam and Armored Core games for its design. I’m sure that, like D.Va, the new hero will also receive a ton of rad skins. D.Mon will join Monitoring when the new season goes live on August 11.
